Microbiology Lab Assistant

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting diagnostic testing through accurate specimen processing and hands-on laboratory support. Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18 years
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous specimen processing or laboratory experience preferred, but not required
- Dependable, detail-oriented, and committed to accuracy
- Ability to multitask and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment
- Strong team player who thrives in a collaborative setting
- Willingness to learn new technology and laboratory processes
- Familiarity with patient confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
Responsibilities
- Assist Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLSs) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) with laboratory activities, including specimen processing, sample plating, and other preparatory procedures
- Operate automated instruments, electronic systems, and precision tools, and perform basic troubleshooting as needed
- Participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance activities
- Maintain accurate documentation, answer phones professionally, and protect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements
- Follow established laboratory safety and infection control procedures
- Perform additional duties as operational needs evolve, with opportunities to gain laboratory experience and develop new skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods
- Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to handle laboratory instruments, pipettes, small objects, and specimens with precision
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Ability to read and interpret information, accurately identify specimens, and communicate clearly in person and by phone
- Ability to bend, stoop, and reach to access equipment and supplies
OSHA Category: This position involves occupational exposure to blood, body fluids, and/or tissues. Employees performing these duties are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis-B vaccination series.
