Senior Systems Engineer
Full-time
In-person

At Interstellar Lab, our mission is to build a future full of life, on Earth and beyond.
We believe in a world where technology enables humans to live in harmony with nature, where biodiversity thrives and expands, and where terrestrial life becomes multi-planetary.

To build this future, we design autonomous biospheric systems to grow plants with precision, on Earth and in Space. Our AI-powered BioPods and BioCapsules leverage biosciences to reproduce and optimize growth conditions for a wide variety of high-value plants.

On Earth, we pioneer molecular and biofarming, boosting the production of metabolites and bioactive compounds while offering sustainable, traceable, and high-quality natural ingredients to the beauty, fragrance, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries.

In space, we collaborate with agencies and private companies to develop biofarming units that advance life science research in microgravity and lay the foundation for future biofactories in space, enabling innovative terrestrial applications and long-duration space missions.

About the Role
As Senior Systems Engineer, you will design and optimize the system architecture of Interstellar Lab’s biospheric platforms, translating biological and product requirements into engineered solutions that are efficient, reliable, and ready for automation. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to integrate fluid, thermal, and control systems into cohesive, high-performance products. The role requires both analytical depth and hands-on involvement during development and commissioning.

Responsibilities

  • Model and simulate thermal, fluidic, and environmental control systems to achieve performance targets
  • Define and size equipment, produce P&IDs, schematics, and specifications
  • Design and validate control loops for climate, irrigation, gas dosing, and lighting systems
  • Prototype and test algorithms in Python to assess stability and responsiveness
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical and electrical systems
  • Own system-level requirements, verification plans, and acceptance testing
  • Troubleshoot and optimize systems during builds and commissioning phases
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, and performance standards

Profile / Qualifications

  • Degree in mechanical, electrical, chemical, aerospace, or systems engineering
  • 6+ years of experience in controlled-environment systems, life sciences, or related industries
  • Strong understanding of system modeling, thermal/fluid design, and control engineering
  • Experience producing P&IDs, load calculations, and performance simulations
  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with modeling or simulation tools (MATLAB a plus)
  • Knowledge of HVAC, irrigation, gas handling, and lighting systems
  • Hands-on experience in testing, validation, and troubleshooting complex systems
  • Fluent in English, French is a plus
