AI & Internal Tools Software Engineer - Summer Internship 2027

Playa Vista, California, United States

Advanced Reentry Technologies

Who We Are:

Inversion is an aerospace and defense company pioneering advanced reentry technology to enable next-generation capabilities from space. By combining high-performance materials, precision aerodynamics, and mission-driven autonomy, Inversion is transforming reentry into an operational capability for an entirely new class of missions.

The company’s highly maneuverable reentry spacecraft, Arc, is designed for rapid global cargo delivery, hypersonic testing, and other national security missions that require precise, controlled flight through the atmosphere. Arc creates an entirely new transportation domain, unlocking unprecedented speed and global reach.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, Inversion designs, manufactures, and integrates its spacecraft under one roof, enabling the company to move rapidly from concept to flight. The company is backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, with customers across the U.S. government and commercial space industry.

Position Overview:

As an AI & Internal Tools Software Engineering Intern at Inversion, you will help build the software products that enable our engineering and business teams to move faster, work smarter, and solve complex problems. You will develop internal applications, automation platforms, and AI-enabled tools that directly improve how we design, manufacture, and operate next-generation spacecraft.

You will join our Internal Software Tools team and take ownership of a major software project, either building a new product from the ground up or developing a substantial feature in an existing application. You will work directly with engineers and other stakeholders to identify problems, develop solutions, and deliver software that people across the company use every day.

This is an opportunity to work across the full software stack, from frontend applications and backend services to APIs, data infrastructure, and modern AI/LLM integrations. We're looking for builders who enjoy turning ideas into real products and are excited about exploring how software and AI can transform the aerospace industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own a major software engineering project from initial concept and requirements gathering through design, implementation, testing, and production deployment.
  • Design and build full-stack applications, including intuitive user interfaces, backend services, APIs, databases, and integrations.
  • Develop AI-enabled tools and intelligent automation systems that streamline engineering and business workflows.
  • Integrate large language models (LLMs), AI agents, and other emerging technologies into practical software applications where appropriate.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers, operations teams, and other stakeholders to understand their workflows and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Gather feedback from real users, iterate on solutions, and deliver polished, production-quality tools.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated software development experience through personal projects, open-source contributions, research, engineering teams, or previous internships.
  • Experience building software applications using one or more languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, or Rust.
  • Familiarity with frontend or backend application development, including web frameworks, APIs, or databases.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including debugging, testing, data structures, and application design.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently build software projects and learn new technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and a willingness to tackle loosely defined technical challenges.
  • Ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical stakeholders and communicate ideas effectively.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing full-stack web applications using technologies such as React, TypeScript, Python, Node.js, or similar frameworks.
  • Experience building and deploying applications used by real users.
  • Familiarity with databases, REST APIs, and integrations between software systems.
  • Experience integrating large language models (LLMs) into applications using APIs or open-source frameworks.
  • Familiarity with AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool calling, or agent orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience with Docker, Linux, CI/CD pipelines, or modern application deployment workflows.
  • Experience building internal tools, dashboards, workflow automation, or developer productivity tools.
  • Interest in applying AI and modern software technologies to complex engineering and business problems.
