Join the Team Reinventing the Brick & Mortar Shopping Experience at IOB

Imagine working at a company where you experience the best of both worlds: the fast-paced execution of a startup paired with the guidance of leaders who have built successful scalable solutions. Led by veteran innovator Hannes van Rensburg, we are not just rethinking the evolution of physical retail—we are redefining it.

We believe that physical retail is NOT dead; rather, it has yet to evolve alongside today’s modern customers. Many shoppers are migrating to online platforms because physical retail has fallen short in convenience, selection, pricing, and enjoyment. We need your expertise to make it happen. At The Internet of Behaviors Company (IOB), we envision a future where physical shopping becomes an enjoyable social and retail experience once again. Our goal is to connect physical storefronts with customers in a way that rivals the convenience of online shopping. We’re looking for great teammates to help us shape the future of connected retail, and we invite you to join us.

You will be part of a skilled team that is fundamentally reshaping physical retail, which still accounts for 80% of the overall industry. Together, we will invent a new standard for customer experience, personalized service, and ultimately, a delightful way to shop. You will work alongside some of the brightest minds in technology, develop cutting-edge software and hardware solutions, and be empowered to tackle challenging problems that will stretch your skills and enhance your thinking. If you are ready to join us in building the future of connected retail, we want to hear from you.

About the Team & Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Leadership:
    • Lead the design and development of premium product enclosures that integrate advanced electronics seamlessly.
    • Create and iterate detailed 3D CAD models (using tools like SolidWorks, CATIA, or Fusion 360) and 2D technical drawings for production.
  • Aesthetic & Functional Integration:
    • Merge industrial design principles with mechanical engineering to produce visually appealing, robust, and ergonomic enclosures.
    • Ensure that designs are optimized for thermal management, durability, and ease of assembly.
  • Manufacturability & Prototyping:
    • Work hands-on with rapid prototyping methods (e.g., 3D printing, CNC machining) to validate design concepts.
    • Collaborate with manufacturing partners to ensure designs meet Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and cost targets.
  • Material & Process Expertise:
    • Select appropriate materials and finishes (e.g., anodized aluminum, high-grade plastics) that elevate the product’s look and feel.
    • Evaluate and integrate advanced fabrication techniques and processes that support high-end product requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work closely with electronics, industrial design, and product teams to ensure cohesive and innovative product development.
    • Provide technical leadership and mentorship as the primary design authority for enclosure engineering.
  • Continuous Innovation:
    • Stay updated on emerging trends and technologies in material science, manufacturing, and design to continually push the boundaries of what’s possible.
    • Propose and implement design improvements based on user feedback and performance testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in product enclosure design for consumer electronics, with a proven track record in designing premium, high-quality housings.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360) and strong sketching and visualization skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in material selection, thermal management, and structural analysis (including FEA).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and transitioning designs from concept to mass production.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as CNC machining, injection molding, and surface finishing.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a startup environment.
  • A keen eye for design aesthetics and a passion for creating products that are both beautiful and functional.

Bonus Points & Other Considerations

  • Experience in consumer electronics design for devices such as laptops, smartwatches, or smartphones.
  • Familiarity with industrial design software and rendering tools (e.g., KeyShot, Alias).
  • Knowledge of sustainability practices and eco-friendly materials in product design.
  • Previous experience working in a startup or agile development environment.

What we offer

  • A competitive salary and equity package.
  • The opportunity to have a significant impact on the design and development of groundbreaking products.
  • A dynamic, fast-paced work environment where innovation and creativity are highly valued.
