Director of Biomanufacturing and Translational Science
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced leader to guide and grow our multi-disciplinary teams in protein sciences, amplification technologies, surface chemistry, and nanoparticle synthesis. You will be responsible for overseeing R&D efforts transitioning into robust product lines, including protein purification (FPLC, fermentation), DNA storage molecule manufacturing, surface functionalization, and nanoparticle production. This is a player/coach role, requiring both hands-on technical contributions initially and strategic leadership to build a high-performing organization as business needs expand.
If you are looking for a pivotal leadership position where you will shape and scale transformative biotechnology solutions, and a dynamic, innovative environment that values collaboration, growth, and continuous improvement, we’d love to hear from you.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Protein Engineering & Purification
- Oversee protein purification pipelines (FPLC, fermentation) and drive the optimization of enzyme expression and purification methods.
- Serve as the subject matter expert, providing guidance on troubleshooting, scale-up strategies, and process improvements.
- Build and mentor a specialized protein sciences team over time.
2. Amplification Technologies
- Lead efforts to optimize and productize PCR amplification and other isothermal technologies for DNA data storage molecule production and mail-in authentication services.
- Drive next-generation amplification platform development that can be deployed in the field, ensuring reliability and ease of use.
3. Surface Chemistry & Treatment
- Oversee functionalization of glass, plastic, and silicon surfaces using click chemistry.
- Collaborate with internal R&D teams to incorporate surface treatments into commercial products and processes.
4. Nanoparticle Synthesis
- Guide the development and scale-up of nanoparticle synthesis processes (e.g., Stöber process for silica nanoparticles).
- Ensure quality and reproducibility for nanoparticle-based products.
5. Cross-Functional Leadership & Product Development
- Translate research insights into scalable product lines, partnering with internal and external stakeholders.
- Define and implement roadmaps, project plans, and key milestones for product introduction.
- Serve as a strategic interface between technical teams, executive leadership, and customers.
6. Operational Excellence & Process Control
- Implement and champion FMEAs, PFMEAs, Fishbone diagrams, process control charts, and other quality tools to stabilize and monitor processes.
- Promote continuous improvement through data-driven decision-making and structured problem-solving methodologies.
Required Skills / Capabilities:
Education & Experience:
- Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- 10+ years of product development experience, 5+ years managing larger teams.
- Proven track record translating R&D into commercial products in a scientific or biotech environment.
Technical Expertise:
- Strong background in protein engineering and purification (FPLC, fermentation).
- Molecular biology expertise, particularly in PCR amplification or other isothermal amplification technologies and related techniques.
- Familiarity with surface functionalization (click chemistry) and nanoparticle synthesis (Stöber process).
Process & Quality Mindset:
- Demonstrated experience with FMEA, PFMEA, Fishbone diagrams, and process control to improve manufacturing and scale-up workflows.
Management & Leadership:
- Proven ability to build, coach, and lead cross-functional teams, balancing hands-on technical work with high-level strategy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for stakeholder engagement.
