Work Location: Huntsville, AL

Schedule: Full Time; 40 hours per week remote work not authorized

Relocation: Negotiable

IronMountain Solutions is seeking an Army Launched Effects Software Safety Engineer for the Army Launched Effects (LE) Product Office to develop and field cutting-edge Launched Effects systems to enhance lethality, survivability, and situational awareness for Soldiers.  This will support a dynamic team dedicated to rapid innovation and delivering transformative capabilities to the warfighter. IronMountain Solutions is seeking a highly skilled Software System Safety Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development, assessment, and rapid fielding of Army Uncrewed LE platforms. As a Software System Safety Engineer in the LE Product Office, you will leverage your experience and abilities in formulating, standardizing, and guiding software system safety practices across multiple platform variants throughout the entire acquisition lifecycle.

 Job Summary:
The Software System Safety Engineer will serve as a key technical authority within the engineering team, responsible for establishing, standardizing, and guiding the software safety framework across multiple Launched Effects Assistant Product Manager (APM) teams. This role requires an agile, proactive systems thinker who can bridge traditional system safety principles with the operational demands of rapid, iterative defense acquisition. The engineer will collaborate closely with APM teams to guide and support them through execution, while actively engaging external stakeholders, airworthiness authorities, and safety review boards to tailor processes that fit the unique characteristics of Launched Effects. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative, adaptable, and thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment where strategies and technical approaches adapt dynamically to warfighter priorities.

 Responsibilities:

  • Formulate, standardize, and maintain a tailored software safety framework and clear guidance that LE APM teams can systematically apply across diverse product lines and vendor architectures.
  • Partner directly with LE APM product teams, project engineers, and contractors to provide hands-on technical guidance, risk assessments, and reviews during the planning and execution of software safety activities.
  • Interface with external safety organizations, review boards, and airworthiness authorities to negotiate and establish tailored software safety requirements aligned with Launched Effects operational profiles.
  • Serve as an active voice within the broader Army aviation and safety communities, clearly communicating the unique technical, cost, and operational nuances of LE platforms compared to conventional aviation platforms.
  • Prepare technical positions, executive white papers, and risk-trade briefings to drive consensus and facilitate process modernization across multiple echelons of Army leadership.
  • Guide and support the development of safety documentation, risk mitigations, and hazard analyses required for safety releases, Airworthiness Releases (AWR), Materiel Releases, and discrete Soldier test and operational fielding events.
  • Evaluate vendor software system safety analyses, safety architectures, and hazard logs to identify core system hazards and ensure safety integrity without levying unnecessary programmatic burden.
  • Rapidly adjust software safety priorities, approaches, and risk mitigation strategies in response to shifting program timelines, emerging threat demands, and iterative fielding cycles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use tools or controls; normal physical activity (reach with hands and arms; climb stairs): and communicate effectively with all levels of employees and leadership. The employee must occasionally lift or move office products and supplies up to 25 pounds.

 Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Software, Systems, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Aerospace, or related technical field).
  • Demonstrated experience in system safety engineering, software hazard analysis, or systems engineering on software-intensive systems.
  • Proven track record of formulating, tailoring, and standardizing technical processes within complex project environments or defense acquisition programs.
  • Strong negotiation, consensus-building, and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to effectively advocate technical positions to external regulatory bodies and senior decision-makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and support diverse product offices in executing technical standards.
  • Proactive, self-starter mindset with the ability to thrive and pivot quickly in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving program environment.

 Qualifications Desired:

  • A Secret Security Clearance (or the ability to obtain one).
  • Familiarity with DoD and Army safety, airworthiness, and materiel release policies and standards (e.g., MIL-STD-882E, AR 70-62, AMCOM Reg 385-17).
  • Experience with Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (Group 1–3 UAS), loitering munitions, or missile platforms.
  • Experience working within rapid acquisition frameworks (e.g., Other Transaction Authority (OTA), Middle Tier of Acquisition (MTA), rapid prototyping/fielding initiatives).
  • Understanding of modern software architectures, safety-critical software partitions, and Modular Open Systems Approaches (MOSA).

Security Clearance

Candidates must have an active Secret clearance or have the ability to obtain and maintain an active Secret level security clearance.
