Internet Security Research Group (ISRG) is a nonprofit with the mission to reduce financial, technological, and educational barriers to secure communication over the Internet. We do this mainly by running public benefit services such as our free and open certificate authority, Let’s Encrypt, our memory safety project, Prossimo, and our privacy respecting metrics service, Divvi Up.

At ISRG, the traditional role of an engineering manager is split into two roles. You can read more about our engineering culture here. Each of our engineers has a technical lead who is responsible for technical decisions, prioritization, and the assigning of work to engineers. Each engineer also has a people manager, and that’s what we’re hiring for here.

As a People Manager for Engineers, you will:

  • Work closely with Technical Leads and the Head of People to cultivate a productive, positive and supportive engineering work environment
  • Initially have between 8-10 direct reports; communicating regularly with team members and conducting administrative managerial tasks. The number of direct reports you manage may change over time as our organization evolves and we grow our understanding of what works best.
  • Offer career growth guidance and assistance
  • Provide constructive and timely performance reviews
  • Ensure that staff have an excellent quality of life at work
  • Communicate HR information and facilitate interactions with HR
  • Participate in (and sometimes lead) hiring processes to bring on additional staff
  • Contribute to building and maintaining organizational policies and trainings 
  • May contribute to technical writing and documentation

Position Must Haves (requirements):

  • 2+ years of experience performing technical work
  • A communication style that embraces kindness, compassion, and clarity
  • The ability to have difficult conversations when necessary
  • Willingness and ability to adapt to evolving priorities and take on shifting responsibilities based on organizational needs
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills

Position Nice to Haves (not requirements):

  • A degree in Computer Science (or similar)
  • Software Engineering experience
  • Engineering leadership experience
  • Technical writing experience
