About the Position

The VP of Capacity will be responsible for leading the strategic planning and optimization of the company’s carrier and brokerage network. This role will oversee the entire capacity management function, ensuring that the company’s asset network and carrier partnerships are optimized for efficiency, cost management, and service excellence. The VP of Capacity will play a critical role in driving the capacity strategy across short-term and long-term supply/demand needs, managing key relationships with carriers and brokers, and ensuring high performance across the network.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Oversight & Optimization:
    Lead the strategic management of the company’s carrier network and brokerage assets, ensuring optimal performance, capacity, and service delivery across the entire network.
  • Carrier & Broker Relationship Management:
    Maintain and grow relationships with large carriers, brokers, and vendors, ensuring their business requirements are met, service metrics are achieved, and expectations are clearly communicated.
  • Capacity Planning & Execution:
    Partner with internal teams (e.g., Operations, Production) to strategically plan both short-term and long-term capacity needs. Ensure that capacity is optimized across all lanes and that resources are allocated efficiently.
  • Performance Metrics & Reporting:
    Develop and monitor KPIs for carrier and brokerage performance, reporting regularly on key metrics such as market conditions, available capacity, and operational performance. Provide insights and recommendations for improvements.
  • Operational & Financial Issue Resolution:
    Collaborate with operational teams to resolve any issues that arise in relation to capacity management, including operational and financial challenges.
  • Contract & Lane Optimization:
    Regularly assess contracted lanes to ensure capacity is optimized and identify new opportunities for improvement. Proactively address any carriers that fall out of compliance with operations or market rate thresholds.
  • Participation in Internal Capacity Bids:
    Drive participation in monthly internal capacity mini-bids (RFPs), engaging carriers to negotiate costs and secure preferred lanes.
  • Rate Uniformity & Compliance:
    Monitor and ensure rate uniformity for assigned carriers across different verticals. Implement and maintain consistent pricing structures that align with operational needs.
  • Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs):
    Facilitate and lead QBRs with assigned carriers and brokers to ensure alignment with service goals, growth objectives, and performance standards.
  • Carrier CRM Management:
    Maintain up-to-date carrier information in the Carrier CRM, ensuring all relevant data is captured and easily accessible for decision-making.
  • Continuous Process Improvement:
    Regularly evaluate and refine processes related to capacity management, ensuring that the network continues to operate efficiently and effectively.

*Requirements:

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in the transportation industry, with a focus on managing carriers, assets, and/or brokerage networks.
  • Proven expertise in capacity management, asset optimization, and brokerage operations, specifically within a transportation or logistics environment.
  • Experience working with large carriers and brokers, with a strong understanding of carrier management, capacity planning, and RFP processes.

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience or certifications may substitute for formal education.

  • Data-Driven: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to assess performance data and make informed decisions to improve operations.
  • Collaboration: Effective at working with cross-functional teams and aligning stakeholders across the organization.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Able to identify issues, think critically, and develop solutions that support operational and financial goals.
  • Organizational Skills: Detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Decision-Making: Strong decision-making abilities, especially under pressure, to maintain operational efficiency and capacity optimization.
  • Experience with Large Carriers & Brokers: Candidates with significant experience in managing large carrier networks or brokerage operations, particularly with expertise in transportation and brokerage capacity optimization, are highly preferred.
  • Results-Oriented Leadership: Proven ability to lead by example, deliver results, and continuously drive improvements in network capacity, cost management, and service delivery.
  • Industry Expertise: Deep knowledge of the transportation industry, with specific expertise in capacity management, asset optimization, and brokerage operations.
