About the Position

The Director of Network Optimization will oversee the strategic management of the company's carrier network, focusing on optimizing transportation efficiency, reducing empty miles, and improving overall capacity utilization. This role requires previous experience in transportation and brokerage capacity optimization, with a focus on improving network performance, reducing costs, and building efficient round-trip loads across a diverse network of customers, lanes, and carriers. They will leverage their expertise to optimize both internal and external resources, ensuring the network runs efficiently and cost-effectively.

Responsibilities:

  • Network Optimization & Oversight:
    Lead the strategic optimization of the company’s carrier network, ensuring maximum efficiency in capacity utilization, reducing empty miles, and improving overall network performance.
  • Carrier & Broker Management:
    Build and maintain relationships with large carriers and brokers, understanding their needs, ensuring service metrics are met, and identifying opportunities for optimization across the network.
  • Capacity & Load Planning:
    Work to create and optimize round-trip loads across multiple customers, lanes, and carriers, ensuring that all capacity is utilized efficiently and that empty move costs are minimized.
  • Cost Reduction Initiatives:
    Focus on identifying opportunities to reduce operational costs, particularly related to empty miles and inefficient moves, while maintaining service quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Collaboration with Internal Teams:
    Partner with internal stakeholders such as Operations, Production, and Sales to ensure network optimization strategies align with broader company goals, customer needs, and operational capacity.
  • Carrier Network Monitoring & Reporting:
    Regularly monitor and assess the performance of carriers and brokers, using key performance indicators (KPIs) to track optimization goals and network performance.
  • Performance Analysis & Continuous Improvement:
    Use data-driven insights to evaluate network performance, identify inefficiencies, and implement continuous improvement processes. Develop and report on metrics that measure capacity, empty miles, and cost savings.
  • Strategy Implementation:
    Develop and implement network optimization strategies to achieve both short-term and long-term goals for reducing empty miles, improving efficiency, and optimizing carrier performance.
  • Stakeholder Communication & Reporting:
    Communicate regularly with both internal and external stakeholders to report on network performance, optimization efforts, and cost-saving initiatives. Facilitate Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) with carriers to ensure mutual goals are met.
  • Process & Technology Improvement:
    Regularly assess and refine processes and systems for network optimization, leveraging technology and data tools to streamline operations and improve performance.

*Requirements:

Experience:

  • 5–10 years of experience in transportation, specifically related to optimizing carrier networks and reducing operational inefficiencies.
  • Demonstrated success in reducing empty miles, optimizing round-trip loads, and building efficient networks for multiple customers and carriers.
  • Strong background in carrier management, brokerage operations, and transportation capacity optimization.
  • Proven track record in developing and executing cost-reduction strategies across large, complex networks.

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience or certifications may substitute for formal education.

    Highly analytical, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use data and performance metrics to drive network optimization.
  • Communication Skills:
    Strong verbal and written communication abilities to effectively engage with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Organizational Skills:
    Detail-oriented and organized, able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Process Improvement:
    Proven ability to identify inefficiencies and implement continuous improvements, using a combination of technology, data analysis, and process optimization.
  • Industry Knowledge:
    Deep understanding of the transportation and brokerage industries, including experience in reducing empty miles, optimizing capacity, and managing carrier networks. Leverage experience with large carriers or brokers, specifically in optimizing transportation networks and capacity, is highly preferred.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, CRM systems, and any relevant transportation management or optimization software.
