Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is seeking a full-time, in-office Fire Protection Consultant to support our Colorado Springs, CO location. We are looking for a highly motivated and self-disciplined fire service leader with extensive experience across all areas of fire and emergency services. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of community fire protection and the ability to develop comprehensive solutions by applying advanced engineered systems and emergency response strategies.

The successful applicant will possess strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills, with a well-rounded background in community fire protection. Key responsibilities will include design reviews, interpreting codes and standards, developing innovative alternative solutions, preparing detailed reports, and collaborating with diverse stakeholder teams. The candidate will oversee the design and implementation of community fire protection strategies, working closely with design teams and authorities having jurisdiction.

This position requires work across multiple time zones and may involve international travel to meet client needs. The role is complex and will demand advanced expertise in fire and emergency services.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and target strategic international markets for fire and emergency services consulting, while developing and implementing effective strategies to secure contracts and deliver high-quality professional services.
  • Oversee project timelines, deliverables, and budgets across a diverse range of consulting projects, ensuring efficient management and successful outcomes.
  • Provide technical writing expertise and manage complex report creation for consulting projects, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to standards.
  • Exceed client expectations by ensuring all tasks are completed on time and within the allocated budget.
  • Lead and coordinate fire code reviews and analyses, including conducting plan reviews and site assessments to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Prepare and conduct peer reviews of technical reports related to projects, ensuring quality and consistency across documentation.
  • Develop innovative fire protection strategies, performance-based design methodologies, and alternative solutions to address client design challenges. Serve as a key contributor to the development of Master Plan designs.
  • Foster effective communication with project team members, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and project success.
  • Support business development initiatives by contributing to the growth of fire and emergency service offerings.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in a chief-level role within a municipal fire agency, combined with extensive experience developing strategic fire and emergency response systems, as well as performance-based design.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering (preferably Fire Protection), Public Administration, Organizational Leadership in Emergency Services, or a closely related field.
  • Preferred qualifications include Executive Fire Officer (EFO), Chief Fire Officer (CFO), registered Professional Engineer, or other recognized professional designations. Candidates with significant applicable experience will also be considered.
  • Extensive expertise in the application of NFPA Standards, including NFPA 1710 and NFPA 1901, and a deep understanding of fire service operations and engineering principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFIA) accreditation model, and how it impacts fire service performance and operations.
  • Familiarity with the fire and emergency response requirements outlined by the US Federal Aviation Administration (Part 139), the KSA General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), as they pertain to aviation-related emergency services and design standards.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS applications related to community risk assessments, emergency response planning, and geographic data analysis.
  • Proven track record of working effectively with municipal fire agencies, as well as municipal, state, and federal government entities, ensuring collaboration and compliance with regulations.
  • Demonstrated success in developing fire and emergency response programs and managing projects with reliability and excellence.
  • Experience as a "Seller-Doer", identifying market opportunities, pursuing new business, developing proposals, and creating technical deliverables.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present effectively both in person and through virtual platforms.
  • Expertise in developing fire and emergency response concepts, conducting performance-based assessments, and performing field reviews and inspections.
  • Strong ability to present clear, technically sound fire protection strategies to a range of stakeholders.
  • Capable of working independently while fostering collaboration with industry professionals, associated trades, and jurisdictional authorities.
  • Experience in conducting comprehensive post-incident analysis of fire and rescue incidents.

National Pay Range

$111,000 - $172,000 USD
