As a Software Engineer at Nextdoor, you’ll work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and engineers.

Your responsibilities will include:
- You’ll write clean, efficient, and well-documented code following industry best practices
- You’ll develop and execute unit, integration, and functional tests
- You’ll optimize code, improve system performance, and refactor applications }}
- You’ll create and maintain technical documentation for software applications and APIs
- You’ll implement security best practices and ensure software compliance
- You’ll utilize version control systems and CI/CD pipelines for deployment
- Participate in in-person Nextdoor events such as trainings, off-sites, volunteer days, and team building exercises
- Build in-person relationships with team members and contribute to Nextdoor’s company culture
What You’ll Bring To The Team
- Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a closely related field
- Three (3) years of experience in the position offered, as a Software/Systems Engineer, or closely related position. and/or the ability to perform at an advanced level in the domain
- Alternatively, employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of progressive, post-baccalaureate, experience in the above positions. Any suitable combination of education, training, or experience is acceptable
- Full term of experience must include: Performing backend development, including designing, building, and maintaining highly available, low-latency web services for large-scale consumer-facing systems using programming languages including Python, Java and Kotlin and web frameworks including Django and Spring; Debugging and monitoring production systems using advanced SQL, including writing complex joins, filters, and aggregations over large log and metrics datasets across many tables to investigate production errors, anomalies, and regression patterns; Containerizing and deploying large distributed backend services using Docker in orchestration environments such as Kubernetes and Amazon ECS, including image optimization, resource tuning, and runtime troubleshooting; Utilizing Git-based trunk or trunk-like workflows and CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment, including Git repositories and CI/CD systems, and configuring pipeline stages for unit, integration, and canary or staged rollouts; Designing, implementing, and consuming RESTful or gRPC APIs for high-traffic services, including versioned, backward-compatible interfaces, authentication/authorization, and schema evolution used by multiple internal microservices and clients; Utilizing application monitoring, centralized logging, and performance profiling tools to create dashboards and alerts and to investigate latency, error-rate, and throughput issues in production services; Utilizing Linux and networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, and debugging production issues using standard Linux diagnostic tools; Utilizing caching systems, including Redis and Memcached, and distributed queues, including Kafka and SQS, to design resilient, high-throughput backend architectures; and Designing and maintaining automated test suites, including unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, using appropriate test frameworks for Java, Kotlin, and Python services, and integrating these tests into CI/CD pipelines
- May work remotely up to 2 days/week from the New York City metro area

Compensation, benefits, perks, and recognition programs at Nextdoor come together to create our total rewards package. Compensation will vary depending on your relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
The starting salary for this role is expected to be $200,000 on an annualized basis, or potentially greater in the event that your 'level' of proficiency exceeds the level expected for the role. The salary range will be determined by the candidate’s geographic location.
We expect to award a meaningful equity grant for this role. With quarterly vesting, your first vest date will take place within 3 months of your start date.
