Project Background
The project aims to build a foundation for long-term behaviour change around organic waste management in cities to limit organic waste going to landfills, thereby reducing methane emissions. The project entails a communications-led pilot intervention focussed on waste segregation at source by households in one municipal ward in Mumbai. Our goal is to move the targeted audience towards responsible waste management practices by measuring changes in their awareness (knowledge and attitudes). The campaign involves a mix of offline and digital events, activations, and partnerships with diverse local stakeholders.
Role and Responsibilities
The right candidate comes with a background in campaigning (including digital), communications or advocacy, proven experience of working on behaviour change campaigns, working with communities, managing and nurturing partnerships, has a keen understanding of/interest in waste management systems, the ability to think on their feet, and deliver high-quality results.

Total contract Duration - 5 months starting January - May 2025 - Nature of Employment: Part-time consultant 18-20 hours a week - contract
- Location: Mumbai (Work From Home + on-ground)
Key Responsibilities:
The person in this role will support on-ground execution for the project. This may include:
- Community Engagement:Lead on local community engagement to raise awareness about waste management at source. This will include identifying relevant community groups, individuals who are particularly active in this space and also identifying local channels of communications for community groups
- Using local language and leveraging knowledge of the local cultural context to effectively communicate campaign messages.
- Encourage community participation and feedback to refine campaign strategies.
- Partnership Management:Manage relationships with project partners for day-to-day coordination on project activities and ensure smooth coordination among them.
- Engage with Municipal Corporation stakeholders including securing meetings and insight sharing between project and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with partners to amplify campaign messages and co-organise events.
- Build and maintain relationships with local partners including community groups, artists, civil society organisations.
- Prepare material/collaterals required for such interactions, presenting the work along with project partners, developing text and translation support as required.
- Campaign Planning:Support with brainstorming on and adapting campaign plans and execution based on real-time insights from the field, partner conversations and the wider ecosystem.
- Support in identifying ways (local and digital) where the campaign can reach target audiences in an effective and efficient manner
- Digital Skills: Utilise digital platforms to promote campaign events and increase community engagement.
- This includes ideation of digital content, and working with the creative team to develop localised content for social media channels to amplify campaign messaging
- Basic monitoring skills are required - using digital tools to track online engagement, analyse campaign performance, and adapt strategies accordingly.
- Event & Activation Management:Plan, organise, and execute campaign events and activations in Mumbai.
- Coordinate logistics, including venue selection, material preparation, and participant engagement.
- Monitoring & Reporting:Maintain and record ongoing activities and share back with the team (photos/videos/other important data that may be useful from a reporting standpoint).
Qualifications/Requirements:
- 3-4 years of experience working with governments, CSOs and mobilising communities - especially on IEC projects/campaigns
- Must be based in Mumbai, and available for partner meetings, on ground activations/events as required
- A background in social impact, campaigning, with digital campaigning skills is expected
- Knowledge of organic waste issues, methane emissions or environmental sustainability is highly desirable.
- Strong organisational and project management skills
- Experience in managing logistics/events and community management is a plus
A strong grasp of English, with fluency in Marathi and Hindi is preferred.
Selection Process
- Candidates shortlisted in the first round will be invited to participate in a time-bound written assignment to assess their skills.
- Candidates shortlisted in the second round will be invited to participate in 1-2 interviews before an offer is extended to the selected candidate.
