Senior Research Engineer, Agentic Systems

San Francisco

About Us

At 3Y Health, we are developing an AI business manager to streamline healthcare administration and address the complexity that consumes nearly 40 percent of the industry’s revenue. Our comprehensive platform empowers clinician entrepreneurs to launch, manage, and grow their own private practices. By equipping independent providers with advanced AI and automation tools, we help them save time, build successful businesses, and deliver better care to their communities. 3Y Health is supported by over $200 million in funding from leading investors including Founders Fund, General Catalyst, SoftBank, and 8VC. This is a hybrid position, with the expectation of being in the office 3 days a week.

About the Role

We are seeking a Research Engineer with a passion for turning foundational ML research into real-world systems that improve lives. In this role, you’ll work on designing and building intelligent, agentic systems that leverage planning, memory, reasoning, and tool use to drive clinical and operational outcomes. You'll contribute to our core research efforts, scale experimentation infrastructure, and help ship innovations that shape the future of healthcare delivery.

You should have strong mathematical foundations, practical ML experience, and comfort working across both experimental and production-grade code. The ideal candidate is deeply familiar with generative AI technologies and has experience deploying ML models in complex environments, especially those with sensitive or regulated data. If you thrive in high-ownership environments and are excited to bridge research and impact, we’d love to meet you.

Responsibilities

  • Develop intelligent, agentic systems using multi-agent coordination, planning, tool use, memory, and personalization
  • Help translate cutting-edge research into deployable systems that create product impact
  • Build and maintain research infrastructure for large-scale experimentation, evaluation, and ablation studies
  • Conduct rigorous experiments and contribute to high-quality reports, publications, or internal memos
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and clinical teams to align research with real-world needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 4+ years of experience in research or engineering roles
  • Proficiency in Python and ML experimentation tooling (e.g., PyTorch, JAX, Weights & Biases)
  • Strong mathematical and algorithmic foundations for ML
  • Demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and analyze ML experiments at scale
  • Track record of writing high-quality, maintainable code
  • Experience deploying ML applications into production systems
  • Comfort operating in multi-disciplinary teams with complex trade-offs
  • Experience designing systems for data- or model-intensive applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing agentic capabilities (e.g., tools, planning, memory, multimodality)
  • Familiarity with reinforcement learning techniques applied to LLMs
  • Broad and deep understanding of generative AI systems, open-source models, and commercial APIs
  • Experience applying AI in healthcare or similarly regulated domains

Compensation

The estimated salary range for this role is $200k - $250k. Total compensation for this position may also include stock options. Note that total compensation for this position will be determined by each individual’s relevant qualifications, work experience, skills, and other factors.
