Freelance Industrial Designer
About the Role
We're seeking an inventive Intermediate Industrial Designer with 8–10 years of experience in aviation, aerospace, or specialized interior design to contribute to the schematic and detailed design of an exciting commercial aerospace project.
This is a fixed-term, part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) project-based need starting in early September and running until December.
This role sits at the intersection of visionary design and technical execution, taking high-level creative sketches from directors and transforming them into material-rich, ergonomic, and highly detailed 2D and 3D design outputs. The designer will collaborate closely with our multidisciplinary team to advance interiors that balance human factors, aesthetics, and aerospace-level functionality.
Responsibilities
Phase 1: Schematic Design (8 weeks: Starting in Early September | ~20 hrs/week)
- Translate director/designer sketches into refined 2D drawings or 3D models (CAD, Rhino, or 3DS Max required).
- Infuse designs with expertise in materials, ergonomics, human factors, hardware, and aerospace standards.
- Collaborate with 1–2 internal team members contributing to design intent and modeling.
- Propose material and detailing strategies to ensure feasibility in aerospace interior applications.
- Leverage Unreal Engine knowledge (ideal, not required) to aid visualization and immersive design reviews.
Phase 2: Detailed Design (6 weeks: Starting in Early November | ~20 hrs/week)
- Participate in the creation of detailed design drawings (plans, sections, elevations, and details) for the interior scope.
- Develop and document material specifications, ensuring compliance with specialized aerospace requirements and ratings.
- Contribute to ergonomic, material, and hardware integration across living and working areas.
- Collaborate with 1–2 internal team members, producing detailed drawings and specifications.
Qualifications
- 8–10 years of professional experience in industrial design, with aviation, aerospace, or spacecraft interiors required.
- Strong expertise in materials, human factors, ergonomics, and aerospace interior requirements.
- Proficiency in CAD, Rhino, or 3DS Max required.
- Familiarity with Unreal Engine strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in detailed drawing sets and material specification packages.
- Strong collaborative mindset, able to work fluidly with both conceptual designers and technical production teams.
Due to the high volume of applications and the specific nature of this project, applicants without the required skills will not be considered.
Only applicants who submit portfolios (either as a link or attached) will be considered.
