Who You Are

You are a natural problem-solver with an eye for detail. You approach challenges with curiosity and intrigue and proactively seek out and develop solutions rather than waiting for them to come to you. You know the ins and outs of workers compensation, and you have the soft skills to build strong relationships both internally, with Sales, Customer Success, and Technology teams, as well as externally with the insurance markets.

As the Director, Workers Compensation Underwriting, you will be responsible for developing and executing underwriting strategies, overseeing and implementing broad risk management strategies across the organization, cultivating relationships with various insurance markets and ensuring profitable growth. You will also manage and develop teams of underwriters and underwriting assistants who perform new business and renewal pricing, alongside a world-class loss control function that will help Justworks’ thousands of customers operate in a compliant and safe manner.  This leadership position requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in underwriting and risk management.  

What You Will Work On

  • Lead the development and execution of underwriting policies, pricing models, and risk selection criteria to drive profitable growth and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Utilize data analytics to identify trends and potential areas of risk exposure.  Prepare and present regular financial and operational reports to executive leadership on the status of risk management initiatives.
  • Manage workers’ compensation insurance renewal strategies for across multiple markets.
  • Advise customers on risk mitigation strategies and best practices.  And ensure the implementation of risk management measures tailored to individual customer needs.
  • Oversee a multidisciplinary team of underwriters, loss control specialists, and underwriting assistants, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence.
  • Provide development and training of underwriting staff, sales teams, and other departments on the principles and practices of underwriting and rating.
  • Providing guidance to underwriters on risk selection, pricing, and terms and conditions
  • Establish and maintain strong partnerships with insurance carriers, reinsurers, and third-party vendors to enhance product offerings, secure competitive pricing, and improve underwriting outcomes.
  • Stay abreast of industry regulations and ensure the company's compliance with relevant laws and standards.  Develop and maintain policies and procedures that align with regulatory requirements.  Serve as a subject matter expert on regulatory matters related to workers’ compensation.
  • Develop and maintain underwriting guidelines, procedures, and best practices to ensure consistency and compliance across the team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in underwriting and risk management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth experience with workers’ compensation insurance. 
  • Deep knowledge of commercial casualty insurance products, underwriting principles, risk management, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with employment practices liability preferred.
  • Expertise in designing and setting up the underwriting policy and monitoring compliance across a variety of industries.
  • Professional certifications/designations such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) are a plus.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills with a proven track record of successfully leading and developing underwriting and loss control teams.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and client relationship management skills.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and strategic thinking skills

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $198,000.00 to $237,600.00 per year.

Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including and not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location.  Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
