Sustainability Consultant

As a Sustainability Consultant at Kinetic Communities Consulting Corporation (KC3), you will have the opportunity to impact communities and organizations seeking to create a more sustainable future. We are looking for a passionate and experienced individual to join our team and lead clean energy, decarbonization, climate resiliency, and community engagement projects.

KC3, an M/WBE B Corp certified firm, works with key players in energy and affordable housing spaces to connect disinvested communities to clean, affordable energy. We believe that promoting climate resilience means meeting these communities where they are and finding solutions that work for them. We partner with local government, the private sector, and nonprofit institutions to expand energy efficiency product integration in communities with the largest need, educate building decision-makers on using energy efficiency as a tool to preserve housing, and elevate opportunities in the energy sector for local New Yorkers. 

Job Overview

As a Sustainability Consultant, you will work with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to implement community driven energy projects and programs in the greater New York City metropolitan area. You will provide outreach and direct technical assistance to participants in large government and utility programs. This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated, committed professional who excels in a collaborative environment. Responsibilities

Outreach & Recruitment 

  • Design and execute outreach and engagement strategies to improve program performance and meet strategic client objectives
  • Develop messaging and communications to influence participant decision-making
  • Engage and recruit potential program participants with a focus on understanding the participant’s perspective
  • Identify and engage community and industry partners to support outreach and recruitment
  • Identify and strategically manage outreach pipelines that can feed leads into the programs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to inform outreach campaigns or limited-time offerings to increase program participation
  • Attend in-person meetings and events, occasionally on weeknights and weekends
  • Present program information to various audiences, including homeowners/building owners and renters from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Meet monthly outreach and participant recruitment goals as applicable
  • Attend virtual internal team coordination meetings 

Case Management & Technical Assistance 

  • Provide subject matter expertise to multifamily building decision-makers, residents, trade allies, and other program participants
  • Stay informed on complementary programs, industry trends, and best practices to continuously improve our services 
  • Proactively looks for new project opportunities to improve existing processes and procedures 
  • Use program tools to conduct basic analysis of building energy consumption, building characteristics, and incentive opportunities
  • Review and assess clean energy scopes of work in affordable multifamily buildings 
  • Conduct analysis and benchmarking of building energy consumption and building characteristics  
  • Research regulatory compliance pathways for assigned projects  
  • Work closely with affordable housing vendors (contractors, etc.) to overcome project barriers and keep projects moving through the pipeline to completion
  • Manage relationships with program participants
  • Meet monthly project completion goals as applicable
  • Track outreach and engagement activities through a project tracking software 

The tasks listed above are representative of work that is typical for this role and are subject to change based on client program and project needs.  

About You

The ideal candidate should have 2+ years of work experience, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for environmental, social, and economic justice. We seek a proactive candidate who can adapt and solve problems independently and collaboratively. You should be a skilled project implementer who is excited to join a dynamic team that is committed to a just energy transition.  

Required qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in in clean energy, climate, affordable housing, community engagement, and/or decarbonization implementation in urban cities or related field
  • Experience working directly with energy project decision-makers (owners, property managers, contractors, etc.) 
  • Familiarity with NYC Local Laws related to energy and climate (Local Laws 84, 87, 95, and 97)  
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of energy audits, retro-commissioning, and retrofit services 
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel throughout New York City and the greater metropolitan area and occasional availability during weekends and weeknights  

Desired qualifications: 

  • Subject matter expertise in affordable housing, building science, building decarbonization, climate resiliency, and/or workforce development
  • Experience influencing cross-functional stakeholders with indirect authority to build consensus on complex topics
  • Bilingual competency (Spanish, Urdu, Arabic, or Chinese)
  • Consulting experience with government and utility clients in NYC
  • Experience with automation and machine learning in the workplace (e.g., Power BI, Co-Pilot, etc.)
  • Relationships and experience working with local community-based organizations 

Candidates must be New York City residents or residents of the greater metropolitan area. While this role is primarily remote, candidates must be available to work in the field up to 3 days per week on average, including in-person events, site visits, client meetings, and in-office team workshops. 

Salary Range: 

$80,000 to $85,000 per year
