Adult Education Instructor

THE TEAM:
The Michigan Works Academic team serves to develop and enhance academic and employability skill sets for participants interested in gaining an academic secondary credential and/or entry level employment. Skilled professionals meet participants at their unique skill levels to sharpen the minds of both youth and adults. The Michigan Works Academic team offers services that eliminate barriers to employment while instilling workplace etiquette and industry specific expectations to participants. This team will work in collaboration with both the Business and Talent teams to connect participants to employment opportunities, while ensuring participants complete appropriate employability trainings.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU:
Our long-term outcomes for the Adult Education Instructor would be to build relationships with all participants who come through our doors, encouraging and motivating students to be their best selves despite any barriers they may face. The Adult Education Instructor will work closely with the rest of the Adult Education Team and provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in mathematics, reading, science, and social studies GED concepts. The Adult Education Instructor will enroll and assess students as needed. The Adult Education Instructor will also monitor student progress on our online learning platform as well and assign practice GED tests as well as official GED tests and complete data entry and classroom attendance as needed.
Responsibilities:
The Adult Education Instructor is a key player within the Adult Education Team. With that said they will be given the tools and support needed to carry out and execute all the functions for the position in the best of their ability.
- Provide assistance and support GED participants both in the learning lab and connect and monitor participant progress in our online learning platform.
- Create personalized learning plans based on individualized participant needs.
- Teach Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies skills in both one-on-one and small group instruction.
- Travel to our Paw Paw Service Center, Galien Public Library, KPEP, and Berrien County Jail for adult education instruction as needed.
- Be available for instruction between the hours of 8am and 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8am-5pm, Wednesday 11am-8pm. (1 hour lunch break). Hours subject to change based on need.
- Assist with participant data including enrollment, assessment, tracking, and follow-up.
- Complete program and participant documentation for local, state, and federal level in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with Michigan Works programs for co-enrollments to provide needed supportive services to participants.
- Motivate and inspire participants along their educational journey.

- Ensure the full integration of the adult education team within the larger Kinexus Team to reduce duplication of effort, streamline services, and maximize all resources in support of the right service at the right time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- Three years classroom teaching experience
- Computer skills, experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Efficient interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to prioritize tasks
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- Five years of classroom teaching experience in alternative education or “at risk” population
- Familiarity with adult education practices
- Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis on Mathematics or Language Arts
- Experience with assigning student work based on assessments
- Experience with computer-based learning
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times.

- Benton Harbor Service Center
- Occasional Outreach to Satellite locations ( With Mileage Reimbursement)
