SALT Senior

Horsham, PA

Experience the Kreischer Miller Difference
Kreischer Miller's State and Local Tax (SALT) practice advises privately held companies on sales and use tax, income and franchise tax, and other state and local tax matters. Most clients are in manufacturing, distribution, construction and professional services. The team is small and close-knit, and its work is driven by consulting. Clients bring us their problems, and we work out the best course of action and carry it through. The Senior works directly with the SALT Manager and practice leader on consulting, compliance, controversy and transaction engagements. The role involves a lot of client contact, project ownership and room to grow.

About Ascend
Backed by private equity from people-focused Alpine Investors, Ascend is building a dynamic platform for regional accounting firms that enables them to stay independent while accessing the resources of a Top 25 firm to help them grow. Ascend provides access to growth capital, robust talent acquisition and training, leading quality management resources, best-of-breed technology, AI tools, an offshore captive, shared back-office services, a catalytic leadership system, and modernized equity incentives so that firms can surmount today's industry challenges to reach their full potential. Scope of Responsibility
The Senior manages several SALT engagements at once, from first data request to final deliverable. Sales and use tax consulting makes up about half the work. The rest is spread across state income and franchise tax, compliance support, notice resolution, and transaction due diligence. The practice covers nearly every state and local tax type, so this person sees a broad range of issues instead of one narrow specialty. Workload is steady through the year, with periodic deadline-driven peaks rather than a traditional busy season.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant tax experience, preferably in public accounting. Candidates with about two years of experience may be considered at the Staff level.
  • Dedicated SALT experience preferred. Candidates from smaller firms with federal tax experience and meaningful state and local exposure will also be considered.
  • CPA or other professional certification is a plus but not required.
  • Experience serving clients in manufacturing, distribution, construction or professional services is helpful.

Technical Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of sales and use tax concepts, including taxability, nexus, exemptions and sourcing.
  • Familiarity with state income and franchise tax, including nexus, apportionment and filing requirements.
  • Understanding of the concepts behind SALT technology tools, not just how to operate them, and the ability to explain results to clients.
  • Ability to research and interpret statutes, regulations and guidance, document conclusions, and turn them into practical recommendations.
  • Strong written communication skills for memoranda, research summaries and client correspondence.
  • Comfort working with large client datasets for analysis and reconciliation.

Tasks and Duties:

  • Sales and use tax consulting and compliance support, including taxability reviews, nexus studies, audit defense, notice responses and voluntary disclosure agreements (about 50% of workload).
  • State income and franchise tax consulting, including nexus and apportionment analyses, notices, audits and voluntary disclosure projects (about 25% of workload).
  • Technical research, transaction due diligence, data analysis and other SALT consulting engagements (about 25% of workload).
  • Serve as a day-to-day contact for clients: manage data requests, give project updates and keep engagement timelines on track.
  • Prepare written deliverables, research memoranda and correspondence with taxing authorities.
  • Take part in client meetings in person and virtually, with growing responsibility as experience builds.
  • Manage several projects at once while keeping close attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Pitch in wherever the team needs support. Everyone on this team does, from the practice leader down.

Core Competencies and Behaviors:

  • Critical thinking: Looks past the immediate answer to the next question, and the one after that, and anticipates client needs and their impact.
  • Adaptability: Thinks quickly, stays composed when priorities shift, and handles urgent client issues with sound judgment.
  • Client communication: Explains complex technical matters clearly and builds trust through responsiveness and follow-through.
  • Project management: Organizes competing priorities, owns assignments, and works independently with limited supervision after onboarding.
  • Collaboration: Works closely with a small team in a low-ego environment where everyone pitches in.
  • Drive to learn: Keeps building technical depth and is eager to grow into a well-rounded SALT professional.
  • Professional ownership: Shows accountability, integrity, initiative and a commitment to high-quality work.

What Makes This Team Different

  • Direct, daily access to the SALT Manager and practice leader, with no layers of bureaucracy and a true open-door culture.
  • Early client exposure. Team members are brought into client meetings as soon as they're ready, whatever their title.
  • A clear development path. The practice develops its people in-house, and in-office collaboration and client time are central to that growth.
  • Flexibility in when work gets done, and real respect for life outside the office.

Other Important Considerations

Working Conditions:
Kreischer Miller offers a flexible hybrid work model designed to support both collaboration and work-life balance. For most positions, the current expectation is to be in the office three days per week. In-office schedules for specific positions depend on client needs, the development of our professionals, and the nature of each role. Because the SALT team works so closely together and develops its people through in-person client work, regular in-office presence is especially valued in this role. Our team thrives in a supportive, high-performing environment where individuals are trusted and held accountable for their contributions. The SALT practice has a steady workload throughout the year rather than a traditional busy season, with periodic short peaks around project deadlines. Local travel to client meetings in the greater Philadelphia area should be expected.

We provide a fair and equal employment opportunity for all candidates regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, age, marital status, disability, or any other legally protected characteristic. We hire and promote individuals solely based on qualifications for the position to be filled and business needs.
