The Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Los Angeles, California in 2028, returning to the United States for the first time in over 30 years. 2028 will be the first time LA hosts the Paralympic Games, creating an opportunity to expand awareness, understanding and inclusion of people with disabilities.

Director, Telecoms Engineering:

The Director, Telecoms Engineering reports to the VP, Head of Telecommunications and plays a critical role within the LA28 Technology team. This position will lead the technical aspects of the telecoms program, ensuring innovative, sustainable, secure, and efficient design, optimization, and deployment of telecom infrastructure and services across all Olympic and Paralympic venues. 

The Director will challenge traditional approaches to telecom deployment, leveraging cutting-edge wireless and alternative technologies to minimize reliance on cabling while ensuring security and sustainability. The role also includes collaborating with regulatory bodies to manage spectrum allocation and monitoring. The ideal candidate will balance innovation, sustainability, and operational reliability, ensuring that telecom solutions align with LA28’s strategic goals and support a secure, scalable infrastructure. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive Innovation in Telecom Engineering: Lead efforts to rethink traditional telecom infrastructure by prioritizing wireless-first designs and sustainable technologies while ensuring alignment with LA28’s strategic priorities. 
  • Security Integration: Collaborate closely with the cybersecurity team to ensure telecom infrastructure meets security standards and minimizes vulnerabilities. Maintain a security-aware approach in all designs and deployments. 
  • Spectrum Management: Collaborate with regulatory bodies such as the FCC to plan, allocate, and monitor spectrum use, ensuring interference-free operations and compliance with Games-time requirements. Implement processes for testing, tagging, and secure deployment of radio equipment across all venues. 
  • Service Level Development: Partner with stakeholders to define and implement service levels, ensuring SLAs are met for both performance and reliability. 
  • Engineering Standards and Optimization: Develop and enforce telecom engineering standards, ensuring designs are efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with LA28’s sustainability and security priorities. 
  • Integration into the Technology Master Plan: Ensure telecom solutions are seamlessly integrated into the broader LA28 technology strategy, with sustainability and security considerations fully addressed. 
  • Sustainable Infrastructure Deployment: Design telecom systems with sustainability and efficiency as core principles, optimizing material use and energy consumption for long-term impact. 
  • Radio Spectrum Monitoring: Support Games-time spectrum monitoring, collaborating with federal agencies to ensure compliance and address interference swiftly. 
  • Risk Awareness and Mitigation: Proactively identify and address technical risks, incorporating security and spectrum considerations into risk management plans. 
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work with the technology integrator, telecom suppliers, venue management teams, and other stakeholders to align technical requirements and ensure secure, high-quality implementation. 
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a forward-thinking technical team that embraces innovation and prioritizes security, sustainability, and operational excellence. 
  • Post-Games Legacy Opportunities: Identify opportunities to deliver lasting telecom infrastructure that supports future needs while maintaining security and sustainability standards. 
  • Support Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB): Foster an inclusive and collaborative team culture that values diverse perspectives and encourages innovative problem-solving. 

 

Background & Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in telecommunications engineering, with a focus on delivering innovative, sustainable, and large-scale projects. 
  • Demonstrated success in implementing wireless-first and sustainable telecom solutions while considering security and spectrum requirements. 
  • Familiarity with collaborating with cybersecurity teams and regulatory bodies such as the FCC to ensure infrastructure meets compliance and security standards. 
  • Strong technical knowledge of telecom technologies, including 5G, WiFi, fiber, and alternative wireless solutions. 
  • Proven ability to balance innovation, practicality, and security in designing and delivering telecom infrastructure. 
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with a forward-thinking mindset that considers security, scalability, and sustainability. 
  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including technology vendors, regulatory bodies, and cross-functional teams. 
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. 

 

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment during the preparation and execution of the Games. 
  • Frequent travel to venue sites for technical inspections and collaboration with venue teams and partners. 
  • Flexibility to work in a hybrid environment, balancing remote and on-site responsibilities.

 

Education:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus. 
  • Certifications in telecom technologies (e.g., CCNP, Certified Wireless Network Professional) or equivalent knowledge preferred. 
  • Knowledge or experience with wireless-first solutions, including 5G and WiFi 6

The annual base salary range for this position is $150,000.00 - $170,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
