Director, Medical Operations - Athlete Services:

The Director position (known internally as the Director, Polyclinic and Village Medical Operations) is a senior leadership role within the Games Logistics & Services (GLS) team, responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing all medical and health service operations in the Olympic and Paralympic Villages. This position ensures that polyclinics are fully operational, accessible, and capable of delivering high-quality, multi-disciplinary health care to athletes, delegation members, and accredited individuals, in alignment with international standards and host-country regulations. 
  
This position serves as the primary link between LA28 Medical Operations, Village Management, National Olympic Committee/National Paralympic Committee (NOC/NPC) medical teams, and international medical stakeholders (International Olympic Committee IOC, International Paralympic Committee IPC, and International Federations IFs), ensuring that comprehensive medical, dental, therapy, pharmacy, and emergency services are delivered seamlessly in the village environment. 

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic & Operational Planning 

• Lead the planning, design, and implementation of village polyclinics, ensuring facilities meet Olympic/Paralympic standards for scope, location, accessibility, and patient privacy. 

• Define the comprehensive scope of services provided at polyclinics, including primary and emergency care, physical therapy, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, dental, nutrition, mental health, podiatry, eye care, and Paralympic-specific adaptations. 

• Oversee facility space allocation, ensuring compliance with recommended standards. 

• Develop and implement opening hours, access models, and patient flow logistics that align with athlete competition schedules. 

• Establish appointment and referral systems, including EMR usage, NOC/NPC direct referrals, and IF medical access. 

• Ensure compliance with data protection regulations (including GDPR and host-country medical laws) for EMR and patient record keeping. 

Medical Delivery & Service Integration 

• Direct the operational delivery of all medical services in the villages, including coordination with hospitals, EMS, and external partners. 

• Ensure 24/7 emergency medical services are available, including mobile response teams and ambulance integration. 

• Oversee clinical waste management, medical devices, and orthotic/orthopedic services in compliance with national standards. 

• Lead planning and delivery of physical therapy services, ensuring multidisciplinary integration of therapy, massage, osteopathy, and other modalities. 

• Oversee radiological and dental programs, ensuring equipment, staffing, and workflows align with Games requirements. 

• Develop and implement the pharmacy program, including formulary management, WADA compliance, and medication safety protocols. 

• Coordinate with Food & Beverage and public health authorities to integrate nutrition and food safety oversight into village operations. 

• Develop clinical protocols and patient pathways for emergency transfers to designated hospitals. 

Leadership & Workforce Development 

• Build and manage the polyclinic and village medical workforce, including recruitment, licensing, credentialing, and training of physicians, dentists, pharmacists, therapists, nurses, and volunteers. 

• Ensure specialized training for Paralympic-specific care, Games-time physical therapy practices, and anti-doping compliance. 

• Establish leadership roles for service areas (e.g., lead dentist, lead radiologist, lead pharmacist) to ensure expert oversight. 

• Promote a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment across all polyclinic services and NOC/NPC medical teams. 

Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination 

• Serve as the primary liaison with IOC/IPC Medical and Scientific Commissions, International Federations (IF) medical personnel, NOC/NPC medical teams, and host-country health authorities. 

• Lead coordination with Village Management for allocation of medical spaces, logistics, and service delivery. 

• Ensure clear communication protocols, dashboards, and reporting systems for medical service delivery. 

Governance, Research & Reporting 

• Develop and manage the medical services budget for polyclinics and village operations. 

• Ensure compliance with international sport medicine regulations, WADA requirements, and IOC/IPC medical standards. 

• Provide daily and cumulative reporting on medical encounters, drug usage, and service utilization. 

• Oversee provision of space and resources for IOC/IPC research offices within the polyclinics. 

Background & Qualifications:

• 8+ years of medical operations and leadership experience, including clinical background (sports medicine, emergency medicine, public health, or related). 

• Significant experience managing large-scale, multidisciplinary health operations (major sporting events, hospitals, or international health programs). 

• Olympic & Paralympic Games or elite international sports experience strongly preferred. 

• Proven expertise in facility planning, workforce management, and health system integration. 

• Experience in managing multimillion-dollar budgets and international stakeholder relations. 

• Licensing and credentialing experience for international sports medicine staff preferred. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Ability to work on-site in an open office environment based in Los Angeles, CA

Education:

• Master’s degree in sports medicine or related field required. 

Expectations:

Medical Planning Expertise 

• Comprehensive understanding of large-scale event medical planning, with proven ability to design and deliver multidisciplinary health services in a temporary, high-performance environment. 

• Demonstrated success in integrating polyclinic services (primary care, emergency medicine, physical therapy, dental, radiology, pharmacy, and nutrition) into a unified delivery model. 

• Expertise in coordinating with international and national medical stakeholders (IOC, IPC, IFs, NOC/NPC medical teams, host-country health authorities) to achieve seamless medical service delivery. 

• Strong track record of implementing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems, data protection compliance, and patient flow logistics. 

Leadership & Stakeholder Management Expertise 

• Extensive experience in a senior leadership role, including building, managing, and motivating multidisciplinary medical teams. 

• Exceptional communication and human relations skills, with ability to collaborate across physicians, therapists, dentists, pharmacists, volunteers, government officials, and international medical experts. 

• Strong interpersonal skills and cultural awareness to effectively serve a diverse athlete and workforce population, including Paralympic-specific care needs. 

• Proven ability to foster a collaborative, high-performance culture that emphasizes teamwork, inclusivity, and service excellence. 

• Demonstrated success in managing multimillion-dollar budgets and delivering cost-effective medical services in complex, international environments. 

• Capacity to represent the Games with executive presence, ensuring confidence and trust from global stakeholders. 

Organizational & Strategic Execution Skills 

• Highly detail-oriented with ability to oversee planning of large-scale medical facilities and services while maintaining focus on athlete-centered care. 

• Skilled at managing change, adapting to evolving operational demands, and executing under pressure in fast-paced, high-profile environments. 

• Proven innovator with ability to design forward-thinking solutions in clinical operations, workforce deployment, and health service delivery.

The annual base salary range for this position is $126,000 - $180,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
