Controls Systems Engineer (Systems Integration)

King of Prussia, PA

Industrial Control Systems Integration | PLC / HMI / SCADA

We are seeking a Controls and Automation Engineer to design, program, test, and commission industrial automation systems for process and manufacturing clients. This role is intended for an engineer who is already effective in PLC and HMI development and wants broader ownership across system design, industrial networking, field startup, and direct client execution.

This is a hands-on systems integration role, not a narrowly defined maintenance or an embedded support position. The engineer in this role will work across the full project lifecycle, from control strategy definition and software development through commissioning and startup, in coordination with process, electrical, and client teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications for continuous, discrete, and batch process systems
  • Translate P&IDs, process narratives, electrical drawings, equipment submittals, and client requirements into practical control system designs and software implementation
  • Develop control narratives, functional descriptions, I/O lists, alarm and interlock philosophies, and related design documentation
  • Program and configure PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems, with primary focus on Rockwell Automation platforms
  • Support or lead portions of industrial network design and device integration, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, IO-Link, remote I/O, VFDs, and field instrumentation
  • Coordinate with process and electrical engineers to define control strategies, panel requirements, equipment interfaces, and overall system architecture
  • Participate in control panel review and equipment specification, including component selection and application of relevant codes and standards such as NEC and UL 508A
  • Execute or support FATs, SATs, loop checks, commissioning, startup, and field troubleshooting
  • Work directly with clients, vendors, panel shops, electricians, and internal teams to resolve technical issues and drive projects to completion
  • Manage assigned project work with attention to technical quality, documentation quality, schedule, and responsiveness

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • 3 to 7 years of relevant experience in industrial controls, systems integration, OEM automation, or plant automation engineering
  • Demonstrated experience developing and troubleshooting PLC and HMI applications in industrial environments
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley platforms, including several of the following:
    • ControlLogix
    • CompactLogix
    • GuardLogix
    • PanelView Plus
    • FactoryTalk View ME
    • FactoryTalk View SE
  • Experience with SCADA and HMI system programming and support software like OPC servers, etc.
  • Experience configuraitng Allen-Bradley PowerFlex VFDs
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, control narratives, loop information, and instrumentation documentation
  • Working knowledge of industrial communications and networked control system integration
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, and field troubleshooting of automation systems
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with clients and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Willingness to travel for startup, commissioning, and field support; travel is typically around 25-50%, with variation based on project needs and may increase during commissioning periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more SCADA platforms such as Ignition, FactoryTalk View SE. AVEVA Wonderware, or GE iFIX
  • Experience with historians such as FactoryTalk Historian or OSIsoft PI
  • Experience with VFD integration, instrumentation checkout, and industrial control panel design
  • Familiarity with managed industrial Ethernet switches, remote access architectures, network segmentation, and fieldbus/device communications
  • Experience reviewing or contributing to panel layouts, wiring concepts, and equipment specifications
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar electrical and controls drafting tools
  • Experience in process-oriented industries such as life sciences, food and beverage, chemicals, consumer products, utilities, or general manufacturing

What This Role Offers

  • Direct involvement in industrial automation projects from design through startup
  • Meaningful technical ownership rather than narrow task execution
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary project work across controls, process, electrical, and field implementation
  • Client-facing project experience and the opportunity to build broader systems integration capability
  • Growth path into senior engineering, lead controls engineering, and project execution responsibility
