Software Engineer II, C++ Faults, Signals, and Modes

Pittsburgh, PA

Latitude AI (lat.ai) develops automated driving technologies, including L3, for Ford vehicles at scale. We’re driven by the opportunity to reimagine what it’s like to drive and make travel safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable for everyone.

When you join the Latitude team, you’ll work alongside leading experts across machine learning and robotics, cloud platforms, mapping, sensors and compute systems, test operations, systems and safety engineering – all dedicated to making a real, positive impact on the driving experience for millions of people.

As a Ford Motor Company subsidiary, we operate independently to develop automated driving technology at the speed of a technology startup. Latitude is headquartered in Pittsburgh with engineering centers in Dearborn, Mich., and Palo Alto, Calif.

Meet the team:

The Faults Signals and Modes team at Latitude builds the on-vehicle software that monitors the health of our advanced driver assistance features and determines whether they’re ready to operate safely. Our monitoring and state handling software is critical to the reliable operation of safety features like pre-collision assistance, Level 2 and Level 3 self-driving, and driver alerts. Our work includes designing and implementing this software in C++ under high level operating systems and realtime embedded operating systems.

Our small team is divided between our headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA and southern California. We also work closely with our partners on Latitude’s systems engineering team, who are primarily based in our Dearborn, MI office. We emphasize proactive communication and using online tools to keep everyone working together efficiently.

What you’ll do:

  • Write software to monitor system health and control the safe engagement and disengagement of driver assistance features. You’ll be contributing to a large C++ codebase, unit-testing your code, and reviewing pull requests from across the company
  • Work with systems engineers to design software and write requirements. Requirements aren’t written in stone—we iterate on them just like we iterate on the software itself
  • Work with feature development teams across the company to integrate their features into our systems. Because our components interact with almost every part of the system, you’ll get to understand all of it at a basic level and work with teams across the company
  • Work directly with test engineers to integrate our software on hardware-in-the-loop test systems and test vehicles. We’re working with real hardware to develop a real product, and we’re testing it accordingly
  • Build out tests and tooling to verify that our software is correct, safe, and reliable. We’re applying modern software development in a field that traditionally relied on slow, requirements-driven development and testing. We’re committed to meeting or exceeding the integrity and safety of those traditional processes

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics or a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience, Master's degree, or PhD
  • Some experience with Python for scripting and data analysis
  • Knowledge of robotics middleware (e.g. ROS or similar frameworks)
  • Experience testing and integrating software that runs on real hardware, e.g. robotics, automotive, aviation, IoT, etc.
  • Willingness to work with systems engineers and test engineers to understand requirements, implement software, and develop unit and integration tests to drive a high-reliability software product to release.

Nice to have:

  • Experience developing tools for fault-injection testing
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop test design and execution
  • Strong knowledge of Python
  • Experience using Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience developing software for embedded systems (i.e. bare metal software or software running under a realtime operating system on microcontrollers)

What we offer you:

  • Competitive compensation packages
  • High-quality individual and family medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account with available employer match
  • Employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan with immediate vesting
  • Employer-paid group term life insurance and the option to elect voluntary life insurance
  • Paid parental leave
  • Paid medical leave
  • Unlimited vacation
  • 15 paid holidays
  • Daily lunches, snacks, and beverages available in all office locations
  • Pre-tax spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care expenses
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Monthly wellness stipend
  • Adoption/Surrogacy support program
  • Backup child and elder care program
  • Professional development reimbursement
  • Employee assistance program
  • Discounted programs that include legal services, identity theft protection, pet insurance, and more
  • Company and team bonding outlets: employee resource groups, quarterly team activity stipend, and wellness initiatives
