Data Engineer

Boston or NYC

Layer Health was founded in 2023 by leading machine learning researchers from MIT and Harvard Medical School. We are building an AI layer that can accurately and scalably synthesize information from medical records, with the mission to reduce friction everywhere in healthcare. Our LLM-powered platform is solving chart review once and for all, across use cases. For health systems, our first product dramatically accelerates clinical registry abstraction in areas ranging from surgery and cardiology, to oncology. Our long term vision is for our AI layer to safely transform patient care and minimize unnecessary heartbreak. Layer Health’s diverse founding team brings expertise across machine learning, UI/UX, large language models, and medicine.

Here’s a collection of articles about our product, mission, recent funding round, etc.

We’re looking for a mission-driven, highly capable Data Engineer to help us reinvent how healthcare data is used and understood. You’ll help own the end-to-end design of our healthcare data architecture—building high-performance pipelines that feed directly into cutting-edge LLM workflows, clinical tooling, and downstream AI systems. You’ll work closely with world-class ML researchers, backend engineers, and clinicians to push the boundaries of what's possible with real-world medical data. We're at an inflection point: the decisions you make will help define the future of data infrastructure at Layer—and, by extension, the future of AI in medicine.

What you’ll do

  • Design and implement robust, scalable pipelines that handle rich, multimodal healthcare data—including raw EMR, FHIR, HL7v2, structured clinical data, and unstructured notes.
  • Bring modern data infrastructure best practices (orchestration, monitoring, versioning, etc.) to a complex, fast-moving ML-centric engineering org.
  • Partner with ML and product teams to make data not just available—but deeply usable for model training, evaluation, and downstream tools.
  • Own the reliability, observability, and evolution of our data pipelines—quickly triaging issues, diagnosing root causes, and shipping fixes.
  • Build strong, clear documentation and data catalogs so data across the company becomes as transparent and explorable as possible.

What you’ll need

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience as a data engineer working with healthcare data at scale, including familiarity with both structured and unstructured data.
  • Deep experience with modern data engineering tooling and workflows: ETL pipelines, orchestration (Airflow, Dagster, or similar), data transformation/versioning (DBT or similar), and cloud-native platforms (GCP preferred but not required).
  • Strong working knowledge of FHIR, HL7v2, and real-world EMR data formats—ideally having navigated messy or incomplete data sources.
  • Fluency in Python, and familiarity with how data tools are set up via infrastructure-as-code (Terraform) and containerized/cloud-native environments.
  • Excellent communicator—able to work cross-functionally with ML researchers, clinicians, and product teams to align on data needs and opportunities.
  • A startup mindset: you’re scrappy, decisive, and love ownership. You enjoy navigating ambiguity, and you care about outcomes—not just code.
  • A passion for transforming healthcare using state-of-the-art AI. You're energized by the idea of bringing powerful models into the real world, responsibly.

Expected compensation range for this role is $130,000-150,000. Compensation is dependent on experience, overall fit to our role, and candidate location. Expected compensation ranges for this role may change over time. If your compensation requirement is greater than our posted salary ranges, please still consider applying to our role. We will make a determination as to whether an exception can be made.
