Senior Director, Design

Germany - Remote; Netherlands

About Us
QuillBot is developing state-of-the-art AI technology to make writing painless. We were founded on the belief that learning and applying knowledge are more rewarding than the mundane aspects of writing. The QuillBot team seeks to continue that mission, automating those tasks and allowing you to focus on what you write, not how you should write it. Transforming the way you write.

Overview of the Role
We are looking for a Senior Director of Design to lead the product design function at QuillBot. This role is for a strong operator—someone who can build systems, set expectations, and provide the clarity designers need to thrive in a fast-moving, high-growth environment.

You will be responsible for evolving our design process in partnership with Product and Engineering, and for leading performance management, hiring, and professional development across the design team. You’ll manage a team of design managers and functional leads, partnering cross-functionally to support planning, execution, and team growth.

Ideal candidates bring experience with complex, multi-surface B2C products, and have led scaled, distributed design teams across multiple pods. You understand how to maintain cohesion and collaboration across surfaces and time zones, and you lead with empathy—resolving friction, fostering strong partnerships, and building the cross-functional chemistry needed to deliver great work.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the product design function, managing a team of Design Managers and the Design System Lead
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve a high-functioning design process optimized for collaboration, speed, and quality
  • Define and track key execution and design metrics to guide strategic decisions and demonstrate impact
  • Ensure design workflows are predictable, scalable, and integrated with our product operating model across pods and workstreams
  • Build strong cross-functional partnerships with Product, AI, and Engineering grounded in shared accountability and operational clarity
  • Actively surface and resolve friction between functions, helping teams align quickly and maintain healthy partnerships
  • Establish clear performance expectations, career paths, and growth frameworks for the product design team
  • Partner with product leadership on quarterly planning and cross-workstream prioritization
  • Collaborate with the Design System Lead to evolve and maintain a cohesive design system
  • Guide the design team in building intuitive, inclusive, and user-centered experiences that drive business outcomes
  • Represent the design function at the leadership level, ensuring design has a seat at the table in strategic conversations

Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of experience in product/UX design, with 7+ years in leadership roles
  • Consistent track record of effectively managing both ICs and managers
  • Experience leading product design for complex software products
  • Background in B2C environments, ideally in fast-moving, high-growth companies
  • Deep experience building and evolving strong Agile UX design operations, systems, and performance frameworks at scale
  • Demonstrated success in scaling and managing multi-pod design teams, including remote and distributed team structures
  • Proven ability to drive cross-functional alignment and navigate complex team dynamics with empathy and decisiveness
  • Deep proficiency with Figma and common Design System frameworks (e.g., Storybook, MUI)
  • Strong plus: experience designing for global userbases or non-English markets
  • Strong plus: experience designing for desktop/mobile applications or browser extensions
  • Strong plus: experience designing AI-powered user experiences or systems
  • Strong plus: experience with clickstream analytics tools (e.g., Amplitude, GA4)

Benefits & Perks:

  • Competitive salary & annual bonus
  • Retirement Savings Plans
  • Vacation & leaves of absence
  • Developmental opportunities through education & developmental reimbursements & professional workshops
  • Maternity & parental leave
  • Hybrid & remote model with flexible working hours
  • On-site & remote company events throughout the year
  • Wellness initiatives through stipend or ClassPass memberships depending on region
  • Tech & WFH set-up
  • Employee referral program
  • Premium access to QuillBot & LanguageTooler
