Overview:

The Radiological Controls (RadCon) Lead is responsible for establishing, implementing, and continuously improving the radiation protection program for Lightbridge's pilot HALEU metallic fuel fabrication facility. This role ensures worker and public dose remain ALARA, oversees contamination control and radiological monitoring across all fabrication process areas (melting, extrusion, machining, and material handling), and maintains compliance with 10 CFR Part 20 and facility-specific radiological work permits. This role will eventually mature into a department manager role and be responsible for directing and overseeing the implementation of the Lightbridge radiological control program within Lightbridge’s fuel fabrication facility.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and maintain the facility Radiation Protection Program, including ALARA program, dosimetry, and radiological work permit (RWP) systems.
• Establish radiological postings, access controls, and contamination control zones consistent with facility layout and HALEU material handling operations.
• Oversee radiological survey programs (airborne, surface contamination, and dose-rate surveys) across melting, extrusion, machining, and storage areas.
• Manage external and internal dosimetry programs, bioassay, and dose recordkeeping for facility personnel and visitors.
• Select, calibrate, and maintain radiation detection instrumentation, portal monitors, and continuous air monitors.
• Lead radiological training and qualification for operations, maintenance, and engineering personnel; deliver RadCon technician training and qualification.
• Coordinate radioactive waste characterization, packaging, and shipment in support of facility waste management and Part 71 transportation requirements.
• Investigate radiological occurrences (e.g., contamination events, elevated readings, RWP violations), perform causal analysis, and track corrective actions.
• Serve as the facility's primary technical point of contact with NRC on radiation protection matters, including inspections and license conditions related to Part 20.
• Partner with the Nuclear Facility Manager and Nuclear Safeguards Specialist on integrated safety basis reviews for new or modified processes.

Required Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiological Sciences, or related field.
• Minimum 7 years of radiation protection experience at an NRC- or DOE-licensed facility handling special nuclear material, at least 3 years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of 10 CFR Part 20 and ALARA program implementation.
• Hands-on experience with radiological survey techniques, instrumentation calibration, and contamination control in an SNM handling environment.
• Experience managing dosimetry and bioassay programs and associated recordkeeping/reporting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing procedures and interfacing with regulators.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified Health Physicist (CHP) or actively pursuing certification.
• Experience with uranium metal/alloy processing (as opposed to oxide fuel forms), including handling of enriched uranium in metallic form.
• Experience with HALEU-specific radiological considerations and criticality safety interfaces.
• Prior involvement in facility startup, licensing, or readiness review activities.
