Overview:
Primary responsibility is to provide technical input on testing projects with national laboratories, universities, and commercial testing companies. The Lightbridge fuel development plan includes both in-pile and out-of-pile testing to validate the predictions of material behaviors. This position will work with a principal/senior engineer to provide technical oversight of contracted institutions to ensure R&D activities are performed within scope, follow quality assurance requirements, and remain on track to support key strategic milestones.
Responsibilities:
- Support testing and development activities focused on Lightbridge cladding materials and performance.
- Plan, evaluate, and interpret testing related to cladding hydride effects, mechanical properties, fabrication effects, corrosion behavior, and performance under normal and off-normal conditions.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to analyze experimental data and characterize cladding material response to environmental conditions such as irradiation, temperature, and corrosion.
- Develop material response models that support integration into fuel performance models and Lightbridge Fuel qualification efforts.
- Apply empirical modeling approaches and, where applicable, multi-physics finite element methods to represent cladding behavior and performance.
- Support licensing and qualification of Lightbridge Fuel through technical analysis, documentation, and interpretation of R&D results.
- Prepare and present technical findings to internal teams, commercial partners, regulators, and the broader research community.
- Develop technical reports, topical reports, presentations, and other documentation supporting fuel qualification and regulatory engagement.
- Identify additional testing, analysis, and development needs as research findings mature and technical understanding of Lightbridge Fuel advances.
- Lead or support future stages of cladding testing and development to address material performance, qualification, and licensing requirements.
Required Experience:
- Proficiency with basic concepts of nuclear engineering and material science engineering
- Experience and Education
- B.S. in an engineering or science discipline with at least 6 years relevant, non-educational experience; Or,
- M.S. in an engineering or science discipline with at least 4 years relevant, non-educational experience; Or,
- Ph.D. in an engineering or science discipline with at least 2 years relevant, non-educational experience
- Demonstratable experience with writing and presentation of engineering work and research findings in professional formats.
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight (remote/hybrid position). The ability to identify needs and take the initiative to resolve them
- The candidate must have a strong working knowledge of radiation material science with specific emphasis on metals and the way in which irradiation defects affect the properties of metals. Additionally, an understanding of oxidation kinetics and general corrosion behavior is important.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise with light water reactor core environments and material challenges
- Expertise with performance and limitations of of light water reactor fuel and cladding
- Expertise in metallic materials in irradiation and high temperature environments
- A successful candidate will have familiarity with irradiation testing methods in test reactors. This includes an understanding of thermal transport concepts and engineering of experiments to produce prototypic conditions within non-prototypic test reactor environments.
