Description
We are looking for a Process Engineer III with expertise in process development and material characterization to join our team at LightForce Orthodontics. You will join a growing team that is designing and implementing advanced manufacturing processes to enable mass production of customized medical devices.
As Process Engineer III, you will lead development and buildout of additive manufacturing processes including printing, post-processing, inspection and characterization. This will include developing and establishing test methods to evaluate product quality and enhance our monitoring and control capabilities. You will additionally support ongoing production through troubleshooting, root cause analysis and validation work. The ideal candidate will have experience working with fleets of printers to achieve consistent performance on a production scale given challenging product requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Printer process development: develop parameters, maintenance procedures, calibration procedures, and qualification protocols to build a robust, reliable overall process.
- Material characterization and testing: utilize various test and inspection methods (hardness testing, tensile testing, DMA, profilometry, etc.) to support process development, qualification, and sustaining activities; develop and validate new test methods as needed.
- Product design support: collaborate with hardware product design team to establish connections between inspection/test outputs and product performance characteristics. Define CTQ metrics and manufacturing specifications.
- Monitoring: build and deploy SPC and data monitoring dashboards to track and analyze production metrics. Leverage this to improve process quality, yield and efficiency.
- Documentation: create and maintain comprehensive work instructions and SOPs.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field and minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience OR
- Master’s degree and minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience
Required Qualifications
- Experience optimizing and troubleshooting additive manufacturing processes and equipment
- Experience with material property characterization and inspection, including test method validation or gauge R&R
- Exceptional analytical abilities and data-driven problem-solving approach; data/statistical analysis experience (e.g. with Python, Matlab, or similar)
- Ability to execute independently and deliver results with minimal supervision while still acting as a strong team player and collaborator
- Excellent communication skills with ability to convey complex technical and manufacturing concepts to diverse audiences
- General knowledge of safety protocols relevant to materials processing and manufacturing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with medical device qualification protocols including IQ/OQ/PQ
- Experience working in a startup environment
Physical Demands
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, hand, and finger manipulation
- Perform work activities with production chemicals, adhesives and epoxies, using required personal protective equipment
Work Environment
- Office environment up to 90%
- Work is sometimes performed in an open office, sedentary position
- Limited temperature fluctuations, heated and air conditioned environment
- Work is performed near moving mechanical parts and occasionally with sensitive chemicals
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
