Graduate Research Intern, Mechanical Characterization

Lila Sciences is seeking a thoughtful and dynamic intern in mechanical testing & analysis to join our physical sciences team. The successful candidate will contribute hands-on experience in mechanical characterization techniques critical for evaluating and optimizing thin film materials for cutting-edge applications. They will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to test novel materials for a variety of applications. This role provides a unique opportunity to engage in innovative research and development activities across multiple disciplines.
What You'll Be Building
- Evaluate thin film materials using a variety of mechanical testing techniques for materials discovery, including method development and robust analysis.
- Analyze materials characterization data and interpret results to identify trends and generate hypotheses.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including experimental and machine learning scientists, to test materials for scientific objectives.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
- Participate in troubleshooting and problem-solving activities to optimize experimental protocols.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- Currently pursuing Master’s or PhD degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in mechanical testing techniques and analysis, such as nanoindentation.
- Proficiency in relevant laboratory techniques such as material synthesis and characterization methods (e.g., profilometry, XRD, SEM).
- Excellent organizational skills with deep attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Bonus Points For
- Experience characterizing metal or ceramic coatings and bulk parts, and their applications.
- Familiarity with data extraction and automation for mechanical analysis.
- Experience with python programming, data analytics, or materials modeling & simulation.
