Summary:

The Taxonomist plays a critical role in developing a granular taxonomy for e-commerce products, ensuring detailed attributes that enhance seller listings, optimize buyer search experiences, and contribute to an overall seamless Marketplace interaction.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Taxonomist with a minimum of three years of expertise in taxonomy development and labeling programs. This individual will support Marketplace and several high-priority Commerce and Vertical initiatives. Working closely with the Taxonomy team and engineering stakeholders, the role encompasses contributions to both front-end user experiences and backend modeling. Core responsibilities include model quality assurance (QA), taxonomy design, and detailed labeling.

The primary focus of this position is to support all Commerce-related taxonomy efforts, with a particular emphasis on the Marketplace Signals team, which is developing GenAI-powered content understanding models that drive user interactions. Additionally, this role will provide occasional support to the Catalog and Shops teams, assisting with product understanding and GenAI initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee GenAI and machine learning model outputs, ensuring content quality across various user experiences.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to analyze model outputs and provide improvement recommendations.
  • Maintain and design the Facebook Marketplace product taxonomy through extensive competitive research.
  • Apply industry best practices in taxonomy development and ongoing maintenance.
  • Partner with stakeholders to launch new commerce experiences leveraging taxonomy for navigation, filters, merchandising units, and recommendations.
  • Consult with internal product teams to expand and refine taxonomy structures while aligning with business objectives.
  • Develop, manage, and maintain a unified taxonomy for all products sold on Facebook Marketplace.
  • Build category structures and custom product collections that enhance features such as recommendations, similar items, and merchandising themes.
  • Optimize product attributes that support ranking models, structured content, faceted search, product comparisons, and more.
  • Provide strategic recommendations for taxonomy management and product features reliant on taxonomy frameworks.
  • Translate broad, conceptual ideas into effective and valuable product experiences.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Top Three Core Skills

  • Proven experience in taxonomy evaluation and implementation for search systems, content management, digital asset management, or product classification.
  • Proficiency in taxonomy management tools such as Semaphore, PoolParty, or proprietary platforms.
  • Strong familiarity with data science and machine learning principles, including classification, training data, and model evaluation.
  • Advanced expertise in Excel and Google Sheets.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in e-commerce taxonomy development.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or SQL (preferred, but not required).
  • Ability to analyze large datasets using SQL or other query languages.

Additional Competencies

  • Expertise in taxonomy management systems for category structuring, attribute maintenance, and metadata optimization.
  • Ability to navigate complex, ambiguous projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills with a proven ability to align stakeholders across distributed teams.
  • Practical experience in taxonomy design for e-commerce platforms, apps, and software.
  • Background in labeling, QA testing, and taxonomy management software utilization.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to execute with precision.
