Principal Mechanical Engineer
Locus Robotics is a leader in the rapidly growing eCommerce order fulfillment optimization space. Our solution helps warehouse owners attain 2-3X efficiency improvement over cart-picking operations, by empowering pickers to work collaboratively with our robots. All this is accomplished while integrating with the operator’s Warehouse Management System, utilizing, and optimizing existing facility infrastructure.
We are looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of autonomous robotics. In this position, you’ll tackle high-impact R&D initiatives, driving innovation across our expanding portfolio of robots and accessories. You'll have the freedom and autonomy to design, prototype, and refine cutting-edge mechanical systems—bringing concepts to life, launching products into production, and ensuring peak performance in real-world environments. This role also involves collaborating with top-tier contract manufacturers and suppliers, managing technical progress, and ensuring seamless execution from design to deployment. Job Description
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define and refine sub-system requirements for both new and existing robotic platforms.
- Design innovative, manufacturable, and maintainable solutions that balance rapid iteration with long-term reliability.
- Use SolidWorks to model, draft, and develop cutting-edge mechanical components for autonomous mobile robots and their accessories.
- Conduct strength, stiffness, and fatigue analyses to ensure components stand up to real-world demands.
- Design systems and components that minimize assembly effort, working closely with operations to validate and refine manufacturing processes.
- Develop high-volume, cost-effective components without compromising on functionality, reliability, or quality.
- Work cross-functionally with suppliers, manufacturing, and procurement teams to ensure seamless product development and production.
- Partner with suppliers to identify competitive manufacturing strategies that enhance efficiency and scalability.
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans to ensure performance, reliability, and long-term durability.
- Present your work to peers, leadership, and customers while maintaining thorough engineering documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Strong analytical skills, including tolerance stack analysis and fatigue/life estimation for components.
- Deep understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA (Design for Assembly) best practices.
- Proficiency in GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping to accelerate development cycles.
- Experience defining and evaluating product requirements.
- Collaborative, hands-on approach with a strong ability to work in cross-functional teams.
- Proficient English written and verbal communications skills required to collaborate effectively with internal and external teams.
