Position Summary
The Sr Metrology Technician performs, as needed, a variety of installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair duties on complex laboratory, process, and utility instrumentation, working closely with the Maintenance, Operations and Automation groups, in a primarily paperless work environment, following SOPs in a cGMP facility. This role works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required in resolving problems and making routine recommendations to management. Incumbents may determine methods and procedures on new assignments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform preventative maintenance, customer request, and corrective instrumentation work orders in support of the East Syracuse LOTTE biologics manufacturing facility.
- Perform instrumentation work on liquid level, temperature, pressure, liquid flow, gas flow, speed, control valves, I/P transducers, solenoids, PLC’s, distributed I/O systems, and other manufacturing and utility system instrumentation.
- Support commercial manufacturing through participation on 24x7 maintenance coverage model.
- Maintain assigned area of ownership within the facility to support inspection readiness and general facility upkeep for support of commercial manufacturing.
- Operate through electronic maintenance work order management system, with all documentation of work performed captured electronically.
- Operate within regulatory governed facility in regards to documentation management, training compliance, deviation management, procedure adherence, and corrective/preventative action implementation.
- Cross-train to support integrated mechanical maintenance, critical utilities, and instrumentation team.
- Assists in qualification activities related to instrumentation.
- Provides technical support as Metrology SME for engineering projects towards improvement of processing equipment, utilities, and facilities instrumentation.
- Provides qualified instruction (Train the Trainer Program) to perform departmental technical training.
- Review and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), Maximo Job plans, continuous improvement projects and calibration documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Operate as back-up to Facilities and Engineering Shift Supervisor on daily coordination as needed.
Education & Experience
- Knowledge of science generally attained through studies resulting in an associate’s degree in electronics technology or equivalent training.
- A minimum of eight years of experience applying the knowledge, principles, and practices relevant to calibration and instrumentation.

- Demonstrated ability with common computer tools such as word processing, spreadsheet, and web-based applications.

- Computer literate in Maximo or similar computer-based maintenance programs.
- Knowledge of both calibration and maintenance of instrumentation on biotech manufacturing equipment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools such as word processing, spreadsheet, and web-based applications.
- Knowledge of ISA standards and the principles/practices relevant to calibration and instrumentation
- Thorough understanding of operating principles of industrial instrumentation and control systems.
- Knowledgeable in P&IDs control theories and techniques and have ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot engineering drawings, P&IDs, and electrical schematics.
- Knowledge of basic relay ladder logic, programmable logic controllers, and distributed control systems.
- Knowledge of Device Net and Foundation Fieldbus instrumentation, Delta-V distributed control system, and Rosemount’s A.M.S. Software.
Physical Demands
This position involves physical activities such as lifting up to 50 lbs. without assistance, bending, twisting, crouching, kneeling, sitting, crawling, walking, climbing ladders, reaching, and repetitive use of hands and arms. The role also requires grasping, fine hand movements, use of foot controls, operating vibratory tools and vehicles, and having clear vision.
Work Environment
This position may require the employee to work in areas where chemical, biologic, and environmental risks are present. This position is located in a medium-scale manufacturing facility with classified areas requiring appropriate gowning and personal protective equipment (PPE). This role will require contact with hazardous materials such as caustic, acids and steam.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Operate as back-up to Facilities and Engineering Shift Supervisor on daily coordination as needed.
