Controller, Finance Controller

We are seeking a dynamic and results-oriented Property Management - Controller to join our organization. The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements, while also providing strategic financial guidance to the leadership team. Key responsibilities include financial planning and analysis, risk management, and compliance with all relevant accounting standards and regulations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a large team of property accounts and finance personnel in our Dallas office.
  • Review monthly financial property/client reporting packages to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP.
  • Coordinates monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes.
  • Develops internal controls and oversees audits of policies and procedures.
  • Assists in budgeting and cash management activities.
  • Leads and directs the work of other employees, through a team of subordinate managers. Responsible for personnel actions including hiring, performance management, and termination.
  • Responsible for aligning department strategy or direction with the overall goals of the organization.
  • Work with property managers on the income and expense prorations for property purchases and sales.
  • Understand lease terminology and work with Lease Administrators to ensure proper accounting treatment.
  • Oversee and approve Accounts Payable/Receivable check and invoice batches.
  • Review bank reconciliations for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Track property tax and mortgage payments to ensure payments are made before due dates.
  • Set budget schedule and review all budgets for third party and owned properties.
  • Work closely with senior property management leadership to determine accounting needs for current and potential new business opportunities
  • Analyze the accounting requirements for new properties and implement them accordingly across various financial ERPs.
  • Coordinate the financial reporting transition of properties sold to new owners/managers.
  • Serve as the administrator in various financial software packages including JDE (financial reporting software), MRI (financial reporting software), AVID (invoice processing system), FAS (fixed asset system), and CashPro (online bank system).
  • Meet with clients and perspective clients as needed.

 

Desired Competency, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree (Master’s preferred)
  • CPA or CPA candidate preferred but not required
  • 12+ years of accounting experience, including 5+ years direct Commercial Property Accounting experience
  • Leadership skills - At least 5 years’ experience leading a team(s)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Analytical thinking, detail oriented, strategic thinking with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong JDE/MRI and Yardi experience preferred. (Or illustrate similar experience with other like financial systems)
  • Expert computer skills required, i.e. Excel, Word.
  • Commercial Real estate experience preferred.
  • Must maintain the highest level of work ethic, professionalism and confidentiality.
