The tax manager role will report to Indirect Tax Senior Manager and will be responsible for US sales & use, Canadian indirect taxes, property taxes, and other filings as required.  The tax manager will have responsibility over US and Canadian indirect taxes and may expand into VAT in the EU, Mexico, and other countries as the company grows and expands. 

The position requires a strong understanding of indirect tax codes including but not limited to registration and compliance and physical and economic nexus requirements relating to retail, manufacturing, and motor vehicle tax laws. 

The candidate will be a super self-starter capable of managing projects/tasks/responsibilities through completion. The candidate must possess exceptional analytical skills, and the ability to effectively communicate complex tax matters to stakeholders. A strong ability to work in a fast-paced, customer-service oriented culture where multi-tasking and hands-on collaboration and communication all with a positive and enthusiastic attitude. 

  

You Will: 

  • Manage external tax advisors on indirect tax compliance and domestic property tax returns to ensure timely and accurate filing of monthly/quarterly domestic indirect tax compliance reporting and remittance. 
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of ongoing systems improvements and automated tools critical to governance and future growth of the tax department. 
  • Ability to collaborate with various internal teams to gather necessary data for tax reporting purposes. 
  • Review and reconcile tax accounts monthly and resolve discrepancies. 
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to internal tax policies and procedures. 
  • Interact with internal teams locally and abroad to conduct tax reviews and assessments to identify areas for improvement. 
  • Identify potential tax risks and assist to develop and implement strategies to minimize audit exposure and responding timely to tax notices. 
  • Manage the use tax self-assessment function of operating and capital expenses and maintaining the tax engine to ensure it is up to date. 
  • Be proactive in providing guidance on sales tax issues related to product and service offerings. 
  • Assess, propose, and support recommendations to indirect senior manager on process improvements, project launches, as the needs arise. 
  • Assist with other tax projects and provide ad hoc support related to tax projects and initiatives, as needed. 

Tax Audits and Investigations: 

  • Lead and coordinate to ensure smooth completion of the various audits (by the states, and audit by external auditors) 
  • Act as the primary point of contact for sales tax audits and inquiries, 
  • Respond to tax audits, inquiries, and investigations from tax authorities, 
  • Prepare documentation, communicate with auditors, and resolve tax-related issues to ensure favorable outcomes. 
  • Respond to notices from tax authorities and assist with indirect tax audits. 

Your Bring: 

  • An experienced professional with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Tax, CMI, MS in Tax or CPA. 
  • Experienced professional with 5+ years of indirect tax experience in Public Accounting and/or corporate tax department. 
  • Technical knowledge of sales and use tax and global VAT/GST/HST systems, preferably in the retail and manufacturing industries. 
  • Strong Knowledge of indirect tax applications proficiency such as OneSource (Sabrix) and accounting software (SAP) to understand interfaces and discuss optimization of tax automation with IT teams. 
  • Experience in tax planning, compliance, and strategy development 
  • Analytical and detail-oriented to communicate and make presentations of improvements and recommendations. 
  • Ability to see the big picture and connect the dots to efficiently work cross-functionally and inter-departmentally 
  • Strong ethics, integrity, and credibility 
  • Ability to build strong bonds and collaborate effectively across departments to meet agreed upon objectives. 
  • Proficient computer skills including strong working knowledge of Excel and prominent desktop applications required to maximize the efficiency and accuracy of tax processes and reconciliations. 
  • Experience leading discussions on complex tax concepts that are concise and relevant to non-tax professionals. 
  • Must be well-organized, hands-on, detail-oriented and able to work independently as well as part of a team; 
  • Strong research skills to identify and resolve indirect tax technical issues.

Salary Range: The compensation range for this position is specific to the locations listed below and is the range Lucid reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for the position taking into account the wide variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including job-related knowledge; skillset; experience, education and training; certifications; and other relevant business and organizational factors.
 
Additional Compensation and Benefits: Lucid offers a wide range of competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability insurance, vacation, and 401k. The successful candidate may also be eligible to participate in Lucid’s equity program and/or a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing such programs.  (Cash or equity incentive awards, if any, will depend on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and company performance.)

Base Pay Range (Annual)

$125,900 - $184,690 USD
