
Staff Equipment Design Engineer, Cell Engineering
We are currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Equipment Design Engineer to oversee battery cell equipment innovation and development from concept to production.
The candidate requires a strong knowledge of equipment development cycle, with the first principle understanding of performance, cost, and quality optimization for Lucid’s equipment deployment. A successful candidate should be able to design equipment from scratch for next-gen battery cells and work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. This position is expected to possess the ability to strive for perfection within a fast-paced environment.
Role:
- Responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing specialized manufacturing equipment and tooling for cell production, with a focus on precision, throughput, and scalability.
- Drive equipment bring-up cycle including RFQ, URS, design review, FAT, SAT, and commissioning
- Implement DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFMA principles into new equipment designs.
- Lead internal teams and equipment manufacturers through communication to set clear deliverables to ensure equipment manufacturing performance, cost, and quality.
- Design mechanical, electrical, and mechatronic systems for cell manufacturing
- Design jigs, fixtures, and tooling with GD&T and TSA principles across multi-functional cell assembly processes
- Lead prototype equipment concepting, design, and validation to support rapid iteration of new product designs and state-of-the-art processes.
- Diagnose equipment failures, conduct root cause analysis, and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Worke cross-functionally with Design, Process, Production, and Controls teams to enable next-gen cell manufacturing.
Qualifications:
- PhD with 3 years, or master’s with 6 years of relevant work experience, or bachelor's with 8 years of relevant work experience
- Direct experience in equipment design and validation for high volume cell manufacturing.
- Strong documentation and communication skills are a must.
- Expert in 3D CAD design tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, etc)
- Deep knowledge of GD&T, TSA, DFM, DFMEA, PFMEA.
- Familiarity with motion control, pneumatics, and sensor integration.
- Experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi).
Preferred:
- Deep experience in both 2170 and 4680 cell equipment development and manufacturing.
- Working experience with Tier 1 cell suppliers.
- Experience in Cell integration from cell to module to pack
- Statistical analysis experience (Cpk, Ppk) and process capability for cell assembly processes.
- Able to drive equipment driven process innovation to resolve cell reliability issues
Education:
Bachelors with 8 years of experience; Masters with 6 years of experience; PhD with 3 years of experience. Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, or equivalent.
Base Pay Range (Annual)
$161,900 - $237,380 USD
