
Sr. Hardware Technician, Powertrain Quality
We are seeking a hands-on and detail-oriented Sr. Hardware Technician to join our Powertrain Quality team. In this role, you will support deep-dive failure investigations for powertrain components returned from the field, working closely with engineering, manufacturing, supplier quality, and service teams. You will play a key role in identifying the root cause of failures, enabling rapid resolution of quality issues and continuous improvement in the powertrain system.
You Will:
- Perform teardown and detailed root cause analysis of returned or failed powertrain components (e.g., drive units, inverters, gearboxes, HV cables, battery packs, etc.)
- Document findings in clear, data-driven reports including photos, failure modes, and conclusions
- Collaborate cross-functionally with service, manufacturing, design engineering, and supplier teams to communicate root causes and contribute to corrective action plans
- Maintain a clean and organized lab workspace and ensure traceability of components under investigation
- Support containment and countermeasure validation activities through testing, inspection, and re-creation of failure modes
- Analyze service data and warranty returns to prioritize issues and identify recurring trends
- Contribute to field fix validation plans and monitor the effectiveness of implemented countermeasures
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures for teardown and inspection processes
- Occasionally travel to service centers or supplier sites to support on-site investigations or field campaigns
You Bring:
- Associate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Technology preferred OR equivalent hands-on experience in powertrain systems
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 5 years of experience in teardown, diagnostics, or quality-related roles in automotive, aerospace, or similar industries
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to disassemble complex components with care and precision.
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals
- Solid understanding of electric powertrain systems including motors, inverters, HV battery systems, and driveline components
- Experience using inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, multimeters, etc.) and root cause analysis methods (5-Why, Fishbone, etc.)
- Excellent documentation and communication skills – both written and verbal
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple investigations concurrently
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in an EV or automotive OEM environment
- Familiarity with quality management systems (8D, PFMEA, Control Plans)
- Knowledge of vehicle diagnostics tools and CAN bus communication
- Previous experience with warranty data analysis or field failure trending
- Proficiency in using PLM or defect tracking systems (e.g., Jira)
- Hands-on experience with HV safety procedures and certification (preferred but not required)
Base Pay Range (hourly)
$39 - $54 USD
