Position Overview
We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Fastening Engineer to support torque application processes within the General Assembly (GA) shop. This role is critical to ensuring torque integrity and bolted joint quality across vehicle assembly stations. The successful candidate will manage fastening tool strategies, process validation, preventive maintenance systems, and torque audit programs to meet safety, quality, and productivity targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Torque Strategy & Process Development
- Work closely with design engineering and product teams to define fastening strategies for Critical (CC) and Special (SC) characteristics.
- Review and provide input on joint design for manufacturability, tool accessibility, and torque feasibility.
- Drive standardization and commonization of fasteners and fastening procedures across GA.
- Fastening Equipment Setup & Validation
- Lead installation and validation of new DC tools and fastening equipment for new models, line balancing, or capacity increases.
- Develop and maintain torque process documentation including control plans, tool settings, and torque-angle validation procedures.
- Configure and support tightening controller systems (e.g., Atlas Copco ToolsNet / ToolsTalk).
- Torque Integrity & Quality Assurance
- Establish torque surveillance systems and audit procedures for CC and SC joints.
- Ensure torque programs are correctly uploaded, assigned, and verified at each production station.
- Monitor and analyze torque quality metrics such as Bypass Events, NOK shots, and Failed Torques.
- Maintenance & Tool Calibration
- Develop and manage preventive maintenance plans for torque tools to reduce MTTR and improve MTBF.
- Track tool performance and initiate root cause investigations for repetitive tool or joint failures.
- Maintain calibration plans and documentation to ensure traceability and compliance.
- Data Monitoring, Analysis & Reporting
- Use ToolsNet, MES, and JIRA to collect, track, and analyze torque-related data.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying tool-related downtime, audit failures, and torque application gaps.
- Collaborate with Quality and Production to implement corrective actions and process improvements.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Production, and Maintenance to align torque strategies with product and process changes.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams for NPI, launch events, and process troubleshooting.
- Support technician training programs to build torque system awareness and improve problem resolution on the shop floor.
Skills
Technical Skills & Competencies
- Deep understanding of fastener types, torque theory, and bolted joint behavior.
- Experience in setting up and validating DC torque tools (e.g., Atlas Copco, Stanley, Ingersoll Rand).
- Familiarity with calibration systems, torque quality audits, and torque error management.
- Effective analytical and root cause analysis skills with a strong quality mindset.
- Proven communication and documentation skills across multi-disciplinary teams.
Tools & Systems
- ToolsNet, ToolsTalk
- MES, ProPlanner, Dozuki
- JIRA (for ECRs, DRs, PCRs, QUALs)
- Minitab, Tableau, Smartsheet
- AutoCAD, MS Office, and torque validation software
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or related technical field.
- 3–5 years of experience in automotive fastening systems, torque process design, or DC tooling systems.
