As the Intern, Power Electronics Mechanical Engineer, you must possess a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical and thermal fundamentals. As our ideal candidate, you exhibit a can-do attitude and approach your work with vigor and determination. You can successfully demonstrate a strong understanding of core physics principles in your respective field, possess the ability to learn quickly and be proactive within a fast-paced environment. With the team you will not be only working on traction inverter topics, as the drive unit handles other vehicle functionalities (such as charging). Be prepared to tackle unexpected problems in new and exciting ways! For more information on how the inverter design process works, check out the Inverter Tech Talk on YouTube!
In this role you will be working on the next generation drive unit for Lucid, called the Atlas drive unit. The primary responsibilities will be getting inverters built and tested, all while developing other variants of the drive unit. This role will be tackling the full spectrum of the development cycle across several different programs, from early product development through validation testing. You will need to be comfortable modeling concepts in CAD software, verifying components integrate into systems, running calculations, building samples, helping run tests, and analyzing test results.
In order to accomplish this, you will need to be comfortable with the following:
- Create models and assemblies within CAD (Catia 3DX)
- Run calculations to verify the system works (tolerance, creepage, clearance, etc.)
- Verify supplier feedback meets intent
- Create test plans to verify structure
- Build first samples to ensure fitment
Role/Responsibilities:
- Designing mechanical components of the Inverter
- Building prototypes in a high voltage lab environment
- Work with Manufacturing to solve problems that develop in the factory
- Ask questions, absorb information, and develop technical skills to make the most of this opportunity - we’re here to help you as much as you’re here to help us!
Preferred Qualifications:
- CAD fundamentals, worked on at least 1 project using CAD
- Ability to "get your hands dirty" running first builds
- Strong core physics understanding
- Ability to apply book knowledge to real-world scenarios
- Fundamental understanding of mechanics, thermals and basic electrical circuits
- Hands-on practical experience with shop tools
Nice to Have:
- Catia / 3DX experience
- Previous intern experience in automotive (FSAE or equivalent)
- Experience with Formula SAE Electric, Baja SAE, or other automotive team/technology
- Knowledge of how to run simulations (FEA, CFD, Mouldflow, etc.)
- Experience working with electrical systems
Education:
- Field(s) of study: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program at an accredited university
- Proof of enrollment in current program (BS)
Additional Compensation and Benefits: Lucid offers a wide range of competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability insurance, vacation, and 401k.
