Associate Scientist (Protein Sciences)

Lumen is seeking a highly motivated, innovative Associate Scientist.

The Associate Scientist will work closely with and support the scientists on the Biologics research team.  The work will involve several projects aimed at developing biologic therapeutics using Lumen’s spirulina-based expression system. The position requires the ability to work as a team member and to assist other laboratory personnel as needed.  It is central to Lumen’s acquisition and integration of new and complex technologies, and to sharing such capabilities with other teams, and as such, flexibility and independence will be essential.

We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist to join our Protein Science team. The successful candidate will support the production, purification, and characterization of recombinant proteins at scale to enable research, preclinical, and clinical programs. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on experience in large scale protein expression systems and downstream processing in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

The individual is also expected to independently perform and learn new laboratory techniques, use specialized laboratory instruments, perform delicate manual procedures, follow, and apply standard laboratory protocols and procedures and provide reliable, independent, and versatile support to biotechnology research.

The position requires strong organizational skills and meticulous laboratory record keeping. Effective communication skills are crucial in coordinating with Lumen’s research and production scientists, in providing status updates, and in raising quality or troubleshooting issues as they may arise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The major tasks for this position are as follows

  • Perform large-scale production of recombinant proteins using mammalian and/or microbial expression systems, including HEK293 and E. coli systems.
  • Operate bioreactors, fermenters, and associated systems for upstream protein expression.
  • Analysis of protein expression using SDS-PAGE and other biochemistry techniques.
  • Use of affinity chromatography and gravity filtration techniques to purify proteins.
  • Assess protein quality using methods including size exclusion chromatography.
  • Measure protein concentration using established protocols or optimize protocols with guidance from supervising scientists.
  • Follow established protocols for various assays and optimizes and/or develop new protocols as needed.
  • Carry out downstream protein purification processes, including chromatography (Affinity, IEX, SEC), filtration, and preferably ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UF/DF).
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments, batch production, and purification data in lab notebooks and electronic systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams in process development, analytical characterization, and quality control.
  • Assist in technology transfer and scale-up of protein production processes from bench to pilot scale.
    Contribute to the optimization and troubleshooting of production protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with lab safety protocols and company guidelines.

Qualifications & Requirements:

 

Education and Experience:

  • BS/MS degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related field of study
  • 2 - 5 years’ experience in molecular biology applied science.

Successful candidate will have the following attributes:

  • Experience in aseptic technique.
  • Familiarity with the operation of large-scale bioreactors and downstream purification systems.
  • Experience with protein quantitation and characterization techniques (e.g., SDS-PAGE, Western blot, UV spectroscopy, FPLC, and HPLC).
  • Experience with size exclusion chromatography using the Akta Unicorn system.
  • Experience in protein expression using various expression platforms including bacterial systems required.
  • Experience in protein-protein interactions using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Bio-layer Interferometry (BLI) preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Self-starter, able to contribute effectively in a fast-changing environment.
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • High integrity and ethics.
  • Commitment to quality and timely delivery of results.

Physical Requirements

  • Sit for extended periods of time (2 or more hours).
  • The position also requires standing on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Perform delicate manual procedures in the laboratory
