Lumos & Associates is currently seeking an early career Hydrogeologist to join our growing team of water/wastewater design professionals. This position is suitable for a professional on a pathway to obtaining their P.G. and/or P.E. licensure.

This is a unique opportunity for an early career hydrogeologist to develop technical experience and expertise on a variety of unique water resource projects. The individual would work primarily from the Reno office, with the opportunity to collaborate with other Lumos office locations.

The Hydrogeologist will provide office and field support contributing to various groundwater, water and wastewater projects in Nevada and neighboring states. Projects will include groundwater exploration, aquifer testing, production wells, hydrographic basin monitoring, dewatering infrastructure, well assessments and other water resource and geological projects.

The successful Staff Hydrogeologist will build a meaningful professional rapport with clients and colleagues, with opportunities to advance within Lumos’ Engineering Division.

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities and skills:

  • Proficiency in applied hydrogeology and geoscience with a high level of attention to detail. An advanced grasp of subsurface flow processes, sedimentology and stratigraphy, and basins and depositional systems is required.
  • Prior drilling fieldwork experience with techniques including reverse circulation, mud rotary, and sonic. Experience with installation and construction of production, monitoring, and dewatering wells.
  • Good technical writing skills with ability to synthesize complex data and findings in reports to clients and stakeholders. Capable of producing high quality figures and tables to accompany written deliverables.
  • Versatility and independence to learn new skills and information quickly, with the ability to learn and collaborate with team members on water resource projects.
  • Good professional communication skills, including the ability to build rapport and relationships with clients, colleagues, and subcontractors.
  • Advanced technical computer skills with standard industry software (e.g., AQTESOLV, Surfer, AutoCAD, GIS) with the aptitude to efficiently learn and implement new software for project workflows. Groundwater modeling and computer programming (Python) experience desirable.
  • Personal motivation with good organizational skills and independent learner. Ability to identify and develop new hydrogeology specialties and services for clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work under the direction of Professional Geologist and Professional Engineer staff.
  • Assist with drilling fieldwork operations. Data collection, processing, and review of lithologic and geophysical data from drilling projects.
  • Monitor well development and aquifer testing. Water sample collection for water quality analysis from multiple sources.
  • Transfer field data and findings into digitized data sets. Integrate data into technical reports for delivery to client and regulatory agencies.
  • Assist with design and planning aspects of water resource projects.
  • Learn and participate in the development and budgeting of new project scopes of work.
  • Provide mentorship and training to interns and earlier career team members.
  • Travel to project sites to oversee drilling and construction activities, often requiring off-road driving and on-foot traversal in rugged terrain.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree from a four-year College or University in Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Geology, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent area of study; M.S. degree is a plus.
  • Between 2 – 5 years project experience in water resources and hydrogeology work.
  • Motivation and ability to pursue and obtain professional licensure as a P.G. or P.E.
  • Strong organizational skills, with ability to maintain detailed field notes and measurements for digitization and implementation in report deliverables.
  • Learn and implement engineering fundamentals to contribute to water resource projects.
  • Safety oriented, with capability to conduct fieldwork in seasonal weather and under adverse conditions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including public/client presentations.
  • Valid driver license and driving record with 3 or less demerit points.
