Geotechnician
Since 1978, Lumos & Associates has provided professional engineering, surveying, geotechnical, and construction management services to clients across northern Nevada, California, and, more recently, southwestern Idaho. At Lumos, we are committed to fostering a positive, engaging, and highly collaborative workplace where employees can thrive. We invest in nurturing talent, professional development, and creating an environment that supports employee well-being. Our focus is on the growth of our business, guided by our five core values: Stay Moving, Dip Down, Own It, Make It Right, and Take Pride.
Build the groundwork for the future. Are you passionate about what’s beneath the surface, literally? As a Geotechnician, you’ll be at the core of projects that shape our communities’ infrastructure, from highways and bridges to environmental restorations and major construction sites.
This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy being outdoors, solving problems, and taking a hands-on approach to science and engineering. You’ll collect and test soils and materials, assist with site investigations, and ensure that every project starts on solid ground, both literally and figuratively.
Working closely with engineers, project managers, and field crews, you’ll help turn data into real-world impact. You’ll also have the independence to take ownership of your work while knowing you’re supported by an experienced team that values safety, curiosity, and precision.
This is a full-time position based out of our Carson City Lab.
What You’ll Do
- Roll up your sleeves and perform field sampling and testing of soils, rocks, groundwater, and construction materials.
- Support geotechnical investigations, including drilling, test pits, and site reconnaissance.
- Ability to perform laboratory testing on soil and aggregate samples using standardized methods as needed.
- Document everything, field observations, test results, and site conditions, with accuracy and detail.
- Maintain and operate field and lab equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist in data analysis, reporting, and project documentation that help engineers make big decisions.
- Uphold safety and environmental compliance on every site visit.
- Ability to travel to project sites may require overnight travel, sometimes remote or rugged, and represent our commitment to quality.
- Review reports from Materials Technicians and help maintain quality assurance.
- Keep company vehicles in top shape and drive responsibly.
What You Bring
- High School Diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of geotechnical or environmental fieldwork, or a mix of education and experience.
- Clear, confident communication, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- A valid driver’s license with a clean record (3 or fewer demerit points).
What Sets You Apart:
- Engineer Intern (E.I.) status (preferred).
- Solid knowledge of soil classification, sampling, and testing procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow technical processes.
- A love for the outdoors and comfort working in challenging field conditions.
