
Senior Engineer, Data and Analytics
POSITION SUMMARY:
Lyell is looking for a Senior Engineer, Data and Analytics to join the Information Technology team. This person will be responsible for implementing data pipelines and building dashboards for meaningful and actionable scientific insights across research, manufacturing, and clinical. We are looking for people who are passionate about data and are interested moving the needle in Life Sciences. This position can be based out of our South San Francisco, California or Bothell, Washington office.
KEY ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and implement Lyell’s cloud-based Data Analytics Platform
- Define data models, and implement robust data pipelines that that push data from instruments in the lab up to the cloud, transform the data, and enable analytics and dashboards
- Work collaboratively in cross-functional groups, such as IT, biological sciences, clinical, and manufacturing
- Python required; must have strong programming skills
- Strong experience with AWS services; Implementing data pipelines, using AWS technologies
- Managing data on S3 data lakes, SQL data warehouses (PostgreSQL), or NoSQL systems
- Strong data modeling skills; Experience with serverless technologies, such as AWS Lambda
- Implementing microservices with Docker
- Experience designing and implementing backend REST services and business logic with various application frameworks
- Building reports and dashboards in Tableau
- Experience and disciple with source control repositories (Github)
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Degree in Computer Science, Math, Physics, or biological sciences is preferred, but not required
- Technology, Business Analytics or related field with a minimum of 5 years.
- AWS, Tableau or other relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate) are a plus.
- An interest in biological sciences
- A good understanding of IoT
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively among cross-functional teams, with a particular understanding for and drive to solve data issues faced by research and clinical scientists.
- Ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet deadlines and balance competing priorities.
- Proven experience in designing and developing complex dashboards and reports
- Experience working with UX designers (ability to create UX designs and wireframes)
- Experience reading and understanding data models
- Experience with clinical trial data
- Strong proficiency in SQL and database management including data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) processes
- Working with engineering teams developing applications on the cloud, particularly AWS
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including presentations of product vision to executives to get buy-in
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively among cross-functional teams
- Ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet deadlines and balance competing priorities
- Excellent analytical skills and scientific/technical expertise

The salary range for this position is $150 - 175k annually, with the opportunity to earn an annual bonus. The salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on Lyell’s compensation practices and an applicant’s qualifications and experience. Employees are also eligible to participate in Lyell’s Equity Incentive Plan.
