The Role
Mach Industries is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer, Factory Software to develop the software and data systems connecting manufacturing equipment to factory operations.
You will develop integrations between equipment, MES, SCADA, historians, data infrastructure, and engineering applications while helping establish Mach's standards for factory software, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and manufacturing data.
This is a hands-on engineering role. You will build applications, APIs, data pipelines, dashboards, and equipment integrations; deploy software to factory edge hardware; and develop tools that make manufacturing data accessible to engineers and operators.
You will work closely with Controls, Robotics, Vision, Manufacturing Engineering, IT, Operations, and external software partners to build a scalable factory software ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy factory software connecting manufacturing equipment, edge devices, MES, SCADA, historians, and manufacturing data infrastructure.
- Evaluate commercial factory software platforms and lead technical proof-of-concept implementations.
- Develop integrations between engineering and manufacturing systems including PLM, MES, QMS, factory equipment, and data platforms.
- Build and maintain APIs and data pipelines using technologies such as REST, OPC UA, MQTT, and DDS.
- Develop standardized equipment data models, machine states, events, alarms, production records, and naming conventions.
- Define requirements for collecting machine, process, quality, and vision data into Mach's manufacturing data infrastructure.
- Develop Mach's IIoT connectivity patterns for machines, sensors, edge devices, and factory applications.
- Develop interfaces between Beckhoff TwinCAT equipment controls and higher-level factory software.
- Build GUI applications, web applications, and industrial HMI tools that provide engineers and operators access to manufacturing data and system integrations.
- Develop OEE dashboards and analytics for availability, performance, downtime, cycle time, throughput, yield, and equipment utilization.
- Build software and data tools that enable engineering teams to analyze and improve manufacturing processes.
- Establish CI/CD, automated testing, version control, containerization, and repeatable deployment workflows for factory software.
- Deploy and support applications running on industrial PCs, edge compute hardware, and centralized infrastructure.
- Develop reusable software libraries, services, APIs, and integration patterns for deployment across production equipment.
- Support data interfaces used by machine vision, robotics, analytics, and machine-learning applications.
- Prototype new applications using manufacturing data, including AI-assisted engineering tools and conversational interfaces where applicable.
- Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, and production launch by validating connectivity, data integrity, traceability, dashboards, and software integrations.
- Develop technical standards and specifications that equipment OEMs and systems integrators can implement.
- Partner with IT/OT teams to define requirements for networking, compute, cybersecurity, and factory infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience developing industrial software, manufacturing software, automation software, connected equipment, or industrial data systems.
- Strong software development experience with Python, C++, C#, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar languages.
- Experience developing and deploying production software applications.
- Experience integrating manufacturing equipment, industrial controllers, or edge devices with higher-level software systems.
- Experience with industrial and software communication technologies such as OPC UA, MQTT, REST APIs, or similar protocols.
- Experience designing APIs, data models, and data pipelines for industrial or manufacturing applications.
- Experience developing GUIs, web applications, or HMI applications used by engineers, operators, or production teams.
- Experience with Git-based version control, CI/CD, automated testing, containerization, and software deployment workflows.
- Experience deploying and troubleshooting software on edge compute devices, industrial PCs, servers, or similar hardware.
- Working knowledge of manufacturing systems and metrics including MES, SCADA, OEE, cycle time, throughput, downtime, yield, and equipment utilization.
- Ability to troubleshoot software, networking, controls interfaces, and data pipelines directly on production equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience evaluating or deploying commercial MES, SCADA, historian, IIoT, or industrial data platforms.
- Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT, EtherCAT, or Beckhoff-controlled manufacturing equipment.
- Experience with ROS 2, DDS, Python, and C++ in robotics or industrial automation environments.
- Experience integrating systems across the engineering and manufacturing lifecycle, including requirements, CAD, PLM, MES, QMS, and production equipment.
- Experience with cloud, data-lake, lakehouse, time-series database, or event-streaming architectures.
- Experience developing dashboards using Grafana, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools.
- Experience with conversational AI, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, or LLM-based engineering applications.
- Experience connecting machine-learning or computer-vision systems with live or historical manufacturing data.
- Experience with discrete-event simulation using SimPy, Simio, or similar tools.
- Experience with factory or robotics digital twins using NVIDIA Isaac Sim or similar simulation platforms.
- Experience deploying applications using industrial edge compute, GPUs, or container orchestration.
- Understanding of ISA-95 and modern manufacturing-system architectures.
- Familiarity with OT networking, cybersecurity, VLANs, firewalls, and industrial network architecture.
- Experience working with equipment OEMs, systems integrators, or commercial software vendors.
- Experience in aerospace, defense, automotive, semiconductor, electronics, or other advanced manufacturing environments.
Additional Requirements
- Available to work extended hours and weekends as needed
