The opportunity

As a Staff Reliability Engineer at Magic Leap, you’ll play a key role in ensuring our products exceed customer expectations for long-term performance and reliability. You’ll be involved throughout the full product lifecycle—from concept to post-launch—developing strategies and executing reliability assessments that proactively identify and mitigate product risks.

What you’ll do

  • Define reliability targets and evaluation methods based on product use cases and lifecycle expectations
  • Lead DFR (Design for Reliability), V&V (Verification & Validation), and experimental activities with cross-functional teams
  • Assess new technologies, components, and assemblies for reliability risk; develop mitigation strategies
  • Design and implement reliability test methods, including the development of specialized test equipment
  • Document test procedures and results; support lab technicians with detailed work instructions
  • Evaluate and quantify reliability risks discovered during testing, including statistical modeling of customer impact
  • Develop reliability strategies and test plans for new products, engineering/process changes, and ongoing reliability testing (ORT)
  • Apply engineering-based approaches to understand product sensitivities and acceleration models
  • Collaborate with teams on root cause analysis, corrective actions, and validation of product improvements

The experience you bring

  • 10+ years of reliability engineering experience, ideally in consumer electronics or electro-mechanical products
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Hands-on experience in reliability V&V development and execution
  • Proven track record in DFR activities such as lifecycle assessments and DFMEA
  • Expertise in environmental, mechanical, and electrical reliability testing methods
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, NPI, and manufacturing teams
  • Familiarity with non-destructive and destructive testing (e.g., X-ray, cross-section, optical inspection)
  • Knowledge of material science and related test methods (a plus)
  • Comfortable working with global suppliers and distributed engineering teams
  • Skilled in reliability modeling and statistical tools (e.g., Weibull++)
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey technical insights to both engineering and leadership audiences

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience in designing and developing test equipment
  • Understanding of DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and manufacturing processes for electro-mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with materials commonly used in electronics (metals, plastics, adhesives)
  • Knowledge of battery technology and testing methodologies
