The opportunity
What you’ll do
- Lead a small team of R&D metrology professionals, setting clear goals and providing feedback to support their professional growth.
- Establish project priorities and manage resources, ensuring efficient workflow across SEM, EDX, uXRF, AFM, ellipsometry, interferometry, FTIR, DSC, and other characterization equipment.
- Apply expertise in metrology, characterization, materials, and nanofabrication to support novel material development, imprint and replication processes, wafer cleaning, plasma etch, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and metals deposition.
- Coordinate with the process integration team and use sound judgment to manage competing priorities around project schedules and tool health.
- Define, develop, budget, and qualify advanced metrology techniques to deepen the fundamental understanding of waveguide materials, processes, and their impact on device performance. This includes recipe setups, statistical validation such as GR&R and matching studies, long-term stability (LTS), and factory and site acceptance testing for new equipment.
- Interpret data from metrology equipment, including identification of potential measurement errors and distillation of issues to the process and materials engineering teams as an integral part of the problem-solving process.
- Must be comfortable working in a cleanroom laboratory environment, adhering to all safety and contamination control protocols.
The experience you bring
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience in advanced materials characterization techniques, including SEM, AFM, ellipsometry, interferometry, XRD, EDX, uXRF, FTIR, DSC, and TGA.
- Proven experience in materials and nanostructure characterization, ideally within semiconductor or AR hardware development.
- Knowledge of statistical methods (MSA/GRR) and process improvement techniques.
- Familiarity with JMP or similar data visualization tools for organizing and analyzing complex data sets.
- Capable of producing clear, concise technical documentation and presentations, and building effective partnerships across teams and with external suppliers.
It’s exciting if you also have
- A strong statistical background and experience in custom scripting for data post-processing (e.g., JMP, R, Python, Matlab)
- Strong technical expertise in processing engineering or related disciplines in a cleanroom environment, ideally within semiconductor or AR hardware development.
- Experience building and managing technical relationships with metrology equipment vendors.
