Magic Leap could be your place if you want to be part of a united team where everyone is empowered and trusted to make an impact. At Magic Leap, you can explore innovative solutions and use your talents to solve real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can grow your skills while helping make our technology available to millions of people as a partner in the mixed reality (XR) ecosystem.  We know that successful change and progress accelerates diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible.

The opportunity

Leading an engineering team of four within the Perception group, the manager will be responsible for the systems that collect essential real-world sensor data, including ground truth, from our XR devices. This data is vital for the development and validation of a variety of perception features like head tracking, eye tracking, depth estimation, object tracking, etc. You'll bridge leadership and hands-on technical contribution—defining technical strategy, setting roadmaps with internal stakeholders, architecting data collection tooling, and writing production code while building and mentoring a cross-disciplinary engineering team. You are responsible for two data collection labs with equipment such as OptiTrack, LiDARs, and robot arms in different geographic regions.

This position requires a seasoned, versatile engineer who can operate autonomously, create opportunity, balance strategic planning with tactical execution, and grow talent while driving technical excellence.

Important: You will lead a distributed team across Europe and the US so you need to be flexible in working across multiple time zones. This is a hybrid role but requires close proximity to our Sunnyvale, CA office. Occasional travel is required.

What you’ll do

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for internal clients, proactively aligning data delivery roadmaps with business needs
  • Design, develop, and maintain hardware and software solutions for ground truth data collection in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Individually develop and maintain production software in Python and C++ as the lead developer
  • Maintain strategic oversight of vendor landscape for hardware and software tooling, evaluating and selecting optimal solutions
  • Orchestrate data collection operations with internal teams and external data collectors
  • Set technical direction and priorities for a cross-disciplinary computer vision team
  • Mentor and coach team members with technical depth and empathy, supporting their professional growth and career development

The experience you bring

  • Bachelor's / Master’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience in Python and C++
  • 3+ years of experience in geometric computer vision
  • 3+ years of technical leadership experience managing and mentoring engineering teams
  • Proven track record in system architecture involving hardware and software
  • Proven track record managing cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with high autonomy in ambiguous environments

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience with camera calibration, bundle adjustment, and hand-eye calibration techniques
  • Hands-on experience with OptiTrack or similar motion capture systems
  • Background in XR/AR/VR development
  • Experience integrating and calibrating Lidar sensors
  • Strong rapid prototyping skills for hardware and software systems
