The opportunity
As a Principal Electrical Engineer within our Electrical Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to design and architect antenna systems for Magic Leap’s next-gen cutting-edge headsets. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and integration of antenna systems into products with challenging industrial design (ID) constraints, as well as leading the efforts in advanced electrical simulation and modeling of rigid and flex RF PCB designs, EMI, ESD, etc. Join our team to continue to revolutionize spatial computing and push the boundaries of Augmented Reality experiences.
What you’ll do
- Develop antenna solutions, drive design, integration, validation and other processes for next-generation headset projects
- Design, optimize and define validation plans to ensure antenna system performance meets internal and customer goals
- Expand beyond antenna simulations into EE signal integrity, ESD, EMI, rigid and flex PCB simulation & modeling
- Provide guidance, coaching, and training to more junior engineers
- Manage project initiatives of strategic importance to the organization, involving large cross-functional teams
- Drive complex hardware and systems decisions through all phases of research & development, engineering design cycles, and validation through productization
- Work cross-functionally with internal partners to define product requirements and expectations
- Communicate complex systems and trade-offs to enable product decisions
- Collect inputs from internal and external partners to design a system that drives toward business goals and objectives
- Generate detailed architectural documentation and diagrams to allow partners to drive towards common goals
The experience you bring
- 10+ years of professional experience in hardware product development with 8+ years of direct antenna design and integration experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Master’s or PhD degree highly preferred
- Expert-level knowledge of EM/RF design principles and concepts with a good mechanical engineering understanding
- Expert-level skills in antenna and system performance measurements (TIS, TRP, Efficiency, OTA, SAR, throughput etc.)
- Practical hands-on expertise with antenna design and integration in high-volume electronic consumer devices, preferably in mobile, AR/VR space
- Highly experienced in antenna system prototyping and implementation
- Hands on Experience with antenna tuning, optimization and measurements
- Highly skilled in using antenna simulation & design tools (e.g. CST, HFSS etc.)
- Highly skilled in RF simulation tools (e.g. ADS) and test equipment (VNA etc.)
- Experience with Anechoic chamber calibration and measurements
- Experience designing antenna systems to support multiple technologies and communication protocols (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 4G/5G etc.), including multi-radio coexistence mechanisms
- Understanding of RF regulatory compliance requirements (FCC, EU etc.)
- Technical communication skills (verbal and written). Experience interfacing with cross-functional teams and driving data-driven decisions
It’s exciting if you also have
- Experience using EE CAD tools for Schematic and Layout creation (e.g. Cadence Allegro, Mentor Graphics etc.)
- RF design experience (WiFi, BT, GNSS, 4G/5G, UWB etc.)
- Experience using EE Simulation tools: e.g. PSPICE, SI/PI tools, Matlab
