About the Role

Magrathea’s COO will be responsible for leading the development and running of the company’s operations, ensuring the delivery of the growth of the company in both large scale manufacturing projects and the support functions to facilitate this. The team member in this role will collaborate closely with the co-founders (CEO and CTO) to deliver the first new greenfield magnesium metal made in America in half a century. 

Role Expectations

  • Manage Magrathea’s operations and execute the 5-year plan, identifying critical risks at a whole company level  
  • Develop world class operations infrastructure and team including scale appropriate process controls, optimized workflow, and systems for manufacturing, supply-chain, quality and process control.  
  • Meeting manufacturing metrics including product complaint to defined specifications, target yield, target cost (broken out as BOM and transformation cost).  
  • Foster a cohesive company and safety culture by setting policies, examples and engaging in effective continuous communication  
  • Maintain key partnerships with suppliers, customers, consultants, landlords, and regulatory bodies  
  • Ensure all finances, payroll, human resources and other functions operate smoothly 

Ideal Background

  • Degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, industrial, chemical, process, or civil engineering preferred), construction management, or similar fields 
  • Significant (>15 years) experience in scaling technology from pilot to commercial operation, ideally within chemical manufacturing, including siting, permitting, and constructing greenfield projects.  
  • Leadership with full confidence and autonomy for productive collaboration with the CEO and CTO 
  • Ability to handle and successfully manage external stakeholders including contractors (e.g., construction, EPCs), suppliers and agencies (e.g., DoD, DoE, funding parties) 
  • Managing multiple internal stakeholder groups, including navigating the dynamics between teams and people within the company, and fostering a strong culture of excellence 
  • Strong background in industrial safety culture 
  • Project management and execution experience with a detailed understanding of what is needed to establish and build a chemical plant (including strategic planning, schedule management, risk management, and project execution)  
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory landscape and permitting processes associated with large-scale chemical process plants 
  • Ability to anticipate potential issues and make high-pressure decisions within ambiguity 
  • Demonstrated track record of working on a team to achieve audacious goals together
  • History of promoting company culture based on humility, transparency, respect, and care for the success of other team members

  • Salary range: $200-$300k annually (commensurate with experience)
