Compensation and Benefits Manager (Hybrid)

SUMMARY

We are seeking a strategic, analytical, and hands-on Compensation and Benefits Manager to partner with the VP of HR in designing and scaling MARA's total rewards program. This role is instrumental in developing compensation structures, optimizing benefits offerings, supporting payroll accuracy, andensure compliance as we continue to grow.   You will also be responsible for driving initiatives in compensation benchmarking, job leveling, equity planning, and the implementation of scalable, cost-effective benefits programs. You will also be responsible for managing key HR systems and processes, including Workday, and collaborating cross-functionally with Finance, Legal, and Talent Acquisition. The ideal candidate will bring strong subject matter expertise, systems fluency, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement and serve as a trusted advisor to employees and managers, and ensure that our total rewards programs align with MARA's mission, culture, and business goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Benefits Administration:

  • Oversee all employee benefits programs including health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), and wellness offerings.

  • Evaluate and enhance benefits offerings to support employee well-being and align with company growth.

  • Serve as primary liaison with benefits brokers and vendors; manage RFPs, renewals, and service delivery.

  • Lead annual open enrollment planning, communication, and execution. Including coordinationwith vendors, system configuration, employee education sessions, and resolving employee inquiries.

  • Create and distribute clear and engaging benefits communications to ensure employees understand and maximize their coverage options.

  • Continuous monitoring and ensure compliance with applicable federal and state regulations (ACA, COBRA, ERISA, etc.).

  • Address employee questions and resolve benefit-related issues in a timely and empathetic

  • Collaborate with Finance and Payroll to ensure accurate deductions and 

  • Analyze benefits utilization and costs, providing recommendations to optimize coverage and cost-effectiveness.

Payroll Responsibilities:

  • Manage end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across all payroll activities.

  • Finalize semi-monthly, multi-state payrolls for exempt and non-exempt employees.

  • Ensure accurate documentation, compliance with applicable wage/tax regulations (e.g., FLSA, IRS, DOL), and timely filings.

  • Maintain payroll records and ensure proper documentation for audits, reconciliations, and 

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax laws, including garnishments, tax withholdings, and labor laws (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, IRS, DOL).

  • Oversee year-end reporting, W-2s, and federal/state filings including 941 and 940 through Workday or relevant providers.

  • Work with HR Coordinators on employee inquiries regarding payroll, deductions, and earnings in a timely and professional manner.

  • Reconcile payroll accounts, benefits deductions, and coordinate with accounting on reports 

  • Partner with internal teams on audit preparedness (internal, external, SOX).

  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance payroll accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.

Compensation Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain job leveling frameworks, salary structures, and compensation bands.

  • Conduct regular market benchmarking and analysis (e.g., Mercer, Comptryx).

  • Support annual merit, bonus, and equity cycles; model scenarios and prepare compensation summaries for leadership review.

  • Administer and track equity programs, including new hire grants and refreshes.

  • Partner with HR and Finance on workforce planning, headcount forecasting, and compensation reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with wage and hour laws, pay equity regulations, and internal governance protocols.

  • Collaborate with Finance and HR leadership on headcount planning, budgeting, and workforce 

Systems Reporting:

  • Lead configuration and continuous optimization of Workday, ensuring accurate system setup for compensation, benefits, and payroll workflows.

  • Create and manage compensation and benefits dashboards and ad hoc reports.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on HRIS/payroll integrations and data accuracy.

  • Strong knowledge of total rewards best practices, HR compliance, and relevant employment regulations

  • Proficient user of Workday for HRIS/payroll/benefits administration.

  • Strong technical aptitude and analytical 

  • Experience in team leadership, coaching, mentorship, and 

  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to present complex data in a simple, strategic way.

  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Experience supporting DEI initiatives through equitable compensation and benefits practices is a plus.

  • Must be self-directed and results focused, with excellent initiative and organizational skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or a related 

  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in compensation, benefits and payroll.

  • Strong understanding of compensation structures, equity programs, job leveling, and total rewards strategies.

  • Hands-on experience with benefits administration, vendor management, and open enrollment 

  • Solid knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (e.g., FLSA, ACA, COBRA, ERISA, pay transparency).

  • Experience working with HRIS and payroll systems; ability to evaluate and support systems 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex topics clearly and concisely.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Collaborative mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous
