The Mission

Mark Kelly for Senate is the campaign organization for Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. Re-elected to a six-year term in 2022 after a ground-breaking win in the 2020 special election, Senator Kelly is a proven leader in the Senate and an independent voice for Arizonans. Mark Kelly for Senate is continuing to build its team by hiring a full-time Communications Advisor to lead press operations for the organization.

The Opportunity

The Communications Advisor will be the primary planner and executor of the campaign’s media operation. They will work closely with the Senior Advisor, Chief of Staff, and key members of the leadership team to shape the campaign’s message in the press and across internal and external-facing events and materials. We are looking for an experienced spokesperson and strategist who brings creative ideas for reaching new audiences, poise in working with key national reporters and stakeholders, and a collaborative approach when working with a high-performance team.

Duties

  • Plan and execute the campaign’s press operation
  • Shape and maintain the campaign’s message and narrative
  • Serve as the primary press staffer for campaign travel and collaborate with other departments to plan campaign trips and events
  • Draft written campaign press materials, including statements, remarks, memos, and more
  • Pitch reporters and handle inquiries from the press on campaign activity
  • Work with other campaigns and stakeholders to plan events and pitch coverage
  • Edit materials from other departments to maintain message consistency and quality

Qualifications

Required

  • At least 5 years of experience in press roles, with at least one cycle managing a press team on a statewide campaign or office
  • Two cycles of experience regularly staffing a principal for events and interviews
  • Strong writing skills, with experience drafting short and long form materials in a principal’s voice
  • Demonstrated success managing relationships, pitching, and handling incoming from top-tier national political reporters

Preferred, but not required

  • Experience working with cultural, consumer, Spanish-language, and other non-political press outlets to earn coverage
  • Knowledge of Arizona electoral politics or prior involvement in Arizona campaigns.
  • Spanish fluency 
  • Background in one or more battleground statewide races.
  • Previous work with an incumbent.

Salary: $10,000-$12,000 monthly, commensurate with experience.
