Senior Benefits Specialist

As Marqeta’s Senior Benefits Specialist, you will lead key benefits operations initiatives, optimize processes, and manage vendors to ensure flawless execution of a high-impact benefits program that drives employee experience and operational success. You’ll be a trusted advisor to employees, a champion for process excellence, and a driver of innovation in benefits operations, helping us scale and evolve as we grow.

We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely within the United States or from our Oakland, CA office. We’d love for you to join us!

The Impact You’ll Have

Employee Experience

  • Perform new hire onboarding presentations, new hire enrollments, reporting, vendor partnerships, and employee escalations.
  • Assist employees with complex benefits issues and act as a liaison between employees and benefit providers to resolve discrepancies.
  • Handle inquiries and escalations, including daily monitoring and resolution of Workday Help tickets and benefits inbox inquiries, escalating to leadership when appropriate.
  • Timely follow-up with employees and People partners for any inquiries on assigned benefits programs.

Benefits Administration

  • Lead projects, including but not limited to auditing enrollment records, vendor and process implementations, and communication campaigns
  • Process and maintain benefits-related transactions in Workday
  • Raise concerns, including employee and/or process gaps, to leadership as needed
  • Work with cross-functional stakeholders to develop, implement, and communicate benefits policies and procedures
  • Responsible for the data integrity of benefits records
  • Confirm/reconcile benefits enrollments to payroll deductions, including spending accounts
  • Complete timely processing, auditing, and reconciliation of benefits-related invoices.
  • Assist with benefits integration for mergers, acquisitions, or divestitures.

Vendor Management

  • Manage vendor performance against service level agreements (SLAs)
  • Work with benefits brokers to manage vendor relationships, including troubleshooting weekly vendor file feeds/integrations

Annual Open Enrollment

  • Drive a successful annual Open Enrollment.
  • Coordinate planning, communications, and testing for annual Open Enrollment.
  • Plan and execute wellness events and initiatives.

Compliance

  • Ensure all benefit plans and programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, NDT, 5500s)
  • Support Health & Welfare compliance, including 5500 filings, Plan Documents/SPDs/SMMs, SBCs, welfare plan non-discrimination testing, and state reporting requirements.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in benefits legislation and advise management on necessary adjustments.

Who You Are

  • Significant experience in US benefits administration in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working at scaling technology companies, with demonstrated ability to thrive amid organizational growth, workforce expansion, and the inherent uncertainty of dynamic tech environments
  • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience managing complete benefits renewal cycles, including renewal planning, open enrollment execution, and post-enrollment reconciliation
  • Workday Benefits experience
  • Advanced Google Sheets expertise and ability to create, organize, and manipulate large sets of data in complex spreadsheets.  Or the same in Excel, and a willingness to learn and work predominantly in Google Sheets
  • Some experience in international benefits administration
  • Flexible, growth mindset, comfort with ambiguity and change
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated success in balancing aiming for excellence versus a sense of urgency. 
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and strong time management skills
  • Exceptional results orientation with a high degree of personal initiative
  • Collaborative team player with a customer-centric approach and focus on doing what is best for the business
  • Proven problem-solving skills as well as an ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously to successful completion in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong vendor management skills

Compensation and Benefits

Marqeta is a Flex First company which allows you to choose your best working environment, whether that be from home or at a company office. To support Flex First, we calibrate pay to a competitive value according to working location. Compensation is aligned according to three tiers within the United States:

  • National: A baseline tier that applies to most of the geographic territory of the United States.
  • Premium: Slightly elevated from the National tier, and oriented toward a narrower set of higher cost-of-living areas, such as Los Angeles CA and Seattle WA
  • Premium Plus: A tier for the most expensive working areas, like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City.

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position is:

  • National: $89,300 - $111,600
  • Premium: $96,600 - $120,800
  • Premium Plus: $105,000 - $131,300
